Russian southern armies retreating under Austro German onslaught along the Galician front. Czernowitz fell to Austrian troops, Kimpelung evacuated, and Dniester operations report Austro German gains. In Flanders rain hampers infantry, Entente trenches strong, German attacks repulsed.
The Senate Finance Committee virtually completed a war tax bill raising the total to about 2.002 billion dollars from 1.672 billion. The final draft cuts beer tax by 25 cents to 1.50 per barrel and roughly doubles wine taxes, projecting an extra 17 million dollars in revenue.

London dispatch reports a statement of siege declared across the Greek Department of Attica, covering Athens and Piraeus, as relayed to the Exchange Telegraph Co. by Aug 8.
Mrs. Mary J. Lamp, who has sent three of her four sons to the army and navy, described the war as Gods Laundry in a letter presented to a local exemption board in Chicago on August 3.

Mayor Spohn backs the push and state highway officials may soon designate the route as a main market highway.
Daniel and John Billman of Wakarusa were injured when a team they were driving to a hay shed ran away at the Culp farm while retrieving their threshing outfit. Daniel suffered five crushed ribs a punctured lung paralysis on the left side and facial injuries while John had scalp wounds and two broken ribs.
An Overland driven by Mrs. Frank Noehler of Vandalia Michigan struck the guard gates at the Jackson street crossing of the Big Four railroad in Elkhart. The top and windshield were wrecked. Mrs Koehler's hands were cut. her husband and one son in the car were unhurt. Many accidents have occurred at this crossing with several autos hitting gates.
Dr. C. W. Frink Dr. A. A. Norris and Dr. I. Wright Short of Elkhart assist Dr. Julian O. Walter of Bristol a physician member of the Elkhart district exemption board under the army draft law.

South Bend police arrested a burglar found inside an auto supply shop. The suspect gave the name Alfred Carrier and age 20.

The state highway commission ordered eight hundred miles of highways upgraded. The Lincoln Highway from Valparaiso through Laporte South Bend Elkhart and Goshen to Fort Wayne is on the list with other routes including a South Bend to Jeffersonville corridor and a Lawrenceburg to Illinois cross. Counties must cover half the cost.
Ex emption district No. 2 claims the distinction of having the healthiest drafted men in Chicago. Out of 60 registrants examined only five were found physically unfit. Seven of the 55 asked for exemption, claiming dependents.
Alma Awalt 32 a Marshall County farmer killed his two year old child with a revolver at his home after returning from Donaldson and then shot his wife three times as she held the baby. He died by his own hand shortly after noon. The mother’s condition was stated as critical but physicians thought recovery probable.
Mortuary notices report Mamie McArthur 30 wife of Arthur McArthur died of internal hemorrhages at General hospital Elkhart. Body to be sent to Eaton Rapids Michigan for burial. Katherine Danner wife of Daniel Danner Bronson Michigan died at Elkhart General hospital two hours after admission. Body sent to Bronson for burial.
Mike Underhalt of Sturgis ate 12 dishes of ice cream in 10 minutes at the Moose carnival. Opponent Arthur Thurston quit before the ice cream overwhelmed him as the crowd watched. A newborn monkey at the carnival was named Little Mike in honor of Underhalt's feat.
Picture shows 20 year old seaman Barnhart of Cromwell with father George Barnhart and sister Mrs Toda Wilden of Goshen. He enlisted after Great Lakes training, served on the Utah at Norfolk where his furlough began July 22. He notes life in the navy and recalls Paul Tom Ira Nane brothers as fellow Goshen naval recruits.
About 76 friends and relatives surprised Mr Marty at his home three miles east of Millersboro for his 88th birthday. The gathering featured games and music with light refreshments as guests wished him many more birthdays.
Geo Neece aged 45 dies in Filton county infirmary after consuming a full peck of green apples. Described as gluttonous, he had been made ill by overeating green beans preceding a paralytic stroke. Funeral services held at the infirmary. survivor is a half brother.
Barnum and Bailey plans a South Bend stop on Thursday August 23 featuring the spectacle Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp. The Elkhart engagement for August 30 was canceled with Goshen hosting the Buffalo Bill Wid West show on that date and Hagenbeck Wallace tentatively slated for the area around September 15.
The 18th annual camp meeting will begin Friday August 10 at the Saints grounds near Yellow Creek lake northwest of Silver Lake and run for ten days. The gatherings attract attendees from across the United States.

M. P. Passguard of Racine Wisconsin is under arrest in South Bend on charges of firing a shot at an auto owned by Max Cohen. The Racine man reportedly admired the color of the Cohen tail light.
William Wiine, a local man with relatives in the area, was badly shocked by lightning near Hicksville Ohio. During the storm three horses belonging to Mr Kline, who was watching a binder, were killed.
Mrs Heart Kramer of Holland Missouri underwent surgery in Memphis Tennessee to remove a tumor weighing 1614 pounds. She is reported to be improving nicely.
Large turnout at Blosser Park south of Goshen for the First Brethren Sunday school picnic with over 250 persons present yesterday.
Adj. Gen. Harry B. Smith contemplates changing mobilization plans at Fort Benjamin Harrison due to poor road conditions. He discussed with Gen. Glenn the difficulty of delivering supplies to about 24 000 guardsmen and soldiers stationed there, noting the large logistical challenge even with current forces.

Horton Tifftey 18 of Redkey dies from injuries after a fall from a silo where he worked near North Jellichester. Mrs. Marie Richards 72 of Kentallville dies from cancer. Mrs. Orlando Lautzentreiser dies at her home in Akron after a three year lung illness. Miss Martha Adams Sr dies at her nephew John Whittenberger’s home in Warsaw after a week illness. she had lived in Rochester most of her life and moved to Warsaw a year ago to live with nephews.
Edward Huber Adams Express Co. employee is presumed drowned after searches near Angola fail to recover his body between the first and second basins of Lake James. A Chicago diver arrived but was unsuccessful. A Toledo diver, summoned earlier, drowned moments before starting for Angola, and the substitute sent in his place also failed.
William Jennings Bryan, former secretary of state, addressed the largest crowd at the Ligonier chautauqua. He spoke in favor of woman suffrage and national prohibition and predicted their rapid success as the country adjusts to war conditions.
The Whitehead reunion will be held Sunday August 22 at the Fair Lawn farm south of Goshen and north of New Paris at Henry Neff's home. Take the interurban car and stop at Fair Lawn.
