Corporal Donald E. Malcolm 19 son of Peter Malcolm of Nappanee Indiana was severely wounded in action in France on July 15 while serving in the field artillery. He enlisted July 5 1917 at Fort Wayne and sailed from Mineola October 15 1917 with the Rainbow division. He was among the first U S fighting units to land in France and was promoted to corporal in the field.

Death by Gas Fumes At Sacred Heart Hospital
Mathias Miller 60 janitor at Sacred Heart hospital Garrett killed himself using gas fumes in the hospital laundry. A nurse found his body face down under a blanket after he attached a six foot tube to a gas jet and placed the end in his mouth. He previously attempted suicide years ago at a DeKalb power plant acetylene tank incident. He had been employed here as a janitor after recovery.
