C W Jennings suffers injuries when a hand is caught between train couplers in Lima Ohio. Emergency crews respond and transport him for treatment. The incident is under investigation by local railroad officials.
Charles W. Jennings a Cincinnati Hamilton and Dayton brakeman is in a Lima hospital with his left hand amputated above the wrist after a coupling accident. He married Miss Delle Rogers about a week ago and is reported to be resting quietly as doctors warn of possible blood poisoning. He may be moved to Millersburg if his condition allows.
Promoter Dr. Stewart of Coldwater Michigan, head of a company with a franchise to enter the city with an electric line, met in conference with Wilber Stonex who had just returned from St Louis with measurements and drawings for the Goshen Fort Wayne line. Officials note no public details yet while local grading on Goshen Angola road is mentioned and the Goshen Fort Wayne company reportedly did not file a $1000 forfeit check. The project has spent funds on election expenses surveyor salaries and small land contracts as part of right of way efforts.
Louis H Noble's funeral was held at his home 111 North Fifth Street with Rev C C Cissell and Dr H L Vannuys officiating. Fire alarm from station 58 summoned East Goshen units to a two room home of Mr and Mrs David Baker in East Goshen at 1 30. Mrs Baker was alone as flames engulfed the structure and contents. The cause is unknown and the house carried no insurance. Marriage licenses issued include Allen M Shrock Clinton township and Ada EB Pletcher Middlebury township.
Sour Benn reports April 25 that the Singer strikers have not yet used violence but are arranging for a major labor demonstration with fears of trouble.
The First Presbyterian church auditorium was full for a Goshen Woman's Musical Club concert of Henry Smart's King Rene's Daughter. Conducted by W Preston MacHenry with Miss Storer and Miss Kreider as soloists, the performance received encores and high praise for ensemble singing and accompaniments by Miss Storer.
Mrs Sarah Lower aged 75 mother of John A Lower died at her son's West Side home after a paralysis stroke. Funeral at German Baptist church Sunday 9 30 a m Rev A C Anda to officiate. Frank A Weatherwax 48 died in Clark hospital Elkhart of Brights disease. Funeral Sunday 1 30 p m. Julia E Van Auken wife of N W Van Auken 55 died at Elkhar e home last night survived by husband and three children.
A stallion owned by A. J. Parker of South Seventh street escaped overnight and was recaptured this morning by Ed Overlease. The horse was taken to Lacy's livery barn. Parker initially feared theft. While wandering near Lake Shore depot the horse narrowly avoided an incoming early morning train.
Streets and alleys committee votes to fill and sow the Austin triangle in grass on North Main Street with Lake Shore Company to maintain the plot. The land remains untitled by Mr. Austin and has long been unsightly. Date change affects High School event with graduates and a $100 prize from Frank J. Irwin.
Leone Muller brings E. W. Muencher a railroad surveyor from Manistee Michigan to LaGrange to run lines for the Miller enterprise. Leone’s plans remain in print and few people believe his railroad ideas.
James Guyer, a bartender at the Commercial in Elkhart, was fined thirty three dollars for an unspecified infraction.
As city election day nears the contest for local offices grows heated with factions within the Republican Party opposing John E. Rigney for marshal. Democratic nominees Edgar Vesey for marshal and Lawrence M. R. Hoover for city judge are framed as capable and well suited by opponents. Vesey’s long service as a night officer and Hoover’s lineage in public service are highlighted as strengths.
The Goshen High School team beats Notre Dame 10 to 8 after a tight ten inning contest. Boulton pitched well for Goshen while Oppergelt and Bronson showcased solid pitching for Notre Dame. Sullivan drove in the winning run in the tenth as Goshen advances to Benton Harbor with the same lineup.
