Two farmers William Comer and George Enders pled guilty to grand larceny for stealing rye and corn from William Mast. Sentenced to 1 to 14 years in Jeffersonville reformatory. taken by deputy sheriff soon.
Kendallville reports Abe McDonald a 20 year old tramp was instantly killed aboard a through fast freight at Lake Shore yards about 11 PM. Home and family unknown. No relatives located.
A night blaze in Chesterton destroyed eight business premises and threatened the town. Assistance arrived from Michigan City and LaPorte.
County commissioners grant a railroad franchise to Michigan investors as work plans for the Fort Wayne to Goshen line advance. A mass meeting in Syracuse features Mayor Deahl and Goshen attorney Deahl, with a subsidy election in Turkey Creek township set for April 14. Rights of way are pursued near Latta farm, and electric line talks with Big Four may route passengers via Milford Junction to Wawasee, while Goshen hosts line sites and land purchases face negotiations.
A Saturday night fire at 108 South Sixth street in the Hughes residence caused heavy damage to a clothes press contents including a $650 seal skin coat and a silk dress. The blaze started in the press with theories ranging from a gas heater to a defective chimney. Mrs. Hughes, an invalid, was aided by Sears Gardner before firefighters arrived. Chief Snobarger limited water use to reduce further damage and the loss is about $1,000 with an insurance policy through Harry C. Wilson agency.
About 9 o clock this morning John Clark family horses were hit on Ninth street by a Big Four switch engine as Jonas S. Yoder drove a wagon toward the depot. One horse died instantly and the other was shot to end its suffering. Damages valued at $200, with Clark seeking settlement or suit for damages.
Postoffice inspector Guy T Gould visited the city and arranged major changes to the post office quarters. The news stand will be removed and the room expanded toward the front with new furniture. Postmaster Sherwin supported the plan and Odd Fellow trustees will begin work soon. The five year lease remains optional and the inspector warned the office could move if remodeling is delayed.
Israel D. Wolfe was released last Wednesday but has not appeared in Goshen. Relatives report no word on his whereabouts. Some think he may be visiting an aunt in Michigan City while others fear he will not return to Goshen.
Albion hosts the May 10 Democratic judicial convention with Judge Adair poised for nomination after securing Noble county delegates. Luke Wrigley may withdraw though not officially announced. Noble county would name its prosecutor due to D W Whiteleather’s declination. Republican contenders include W H Wigton Ligonier and L W Welker Auburn and G Gates Columbia City.
Private No 210 of the interurban railway carried President Kennedy Vice President Moe M Smith and other officials through the city yesterday after dining at the Hascall. They then returned to South Bend. Commercial Exchange members began circulating subscription papers to raise 2000 for a new rubber company to occupy the Ariel plant. Forty men must be employed before the funds are paid.
The Rochester Sentinel criticizes Congressman Brick for sending garden seeds to Fulton county claiming they won't ease political tensions. It urges sending olive branches and urges better appointments rather than seeds as next winter’s soup effort is deemed too late. The Howard county prohibitionists hold a convention with Dr. W H Boles billed to speak, drawing predicted trouble. Singer Manufacturing workers vote to stay out after a hopeful settlement falters at Maennerchor hall. A 1886 April 6 snowstorm dropped six inches in Elkhart and Goshen with lesser amounts in South Bend.
E Connor the tailor moves his establishment from the Stone building on North Main to the rear of the Dewey room corner Main and Washington Streets. He teams with Herman Goldstein. Residents on North Ninth petition extending water mains from Middlebury to Mercer avenue. council vote set for tonight.
The council will meet in regular session tonight with nothing major on the agenda. Senator Fairbanks introduced Enoch G. Hogate to the president last Saturday. Hogate is a candidate for district judge to succeed John H. Baker. A supper is planned at the Presbyterian church on Thursday April 10.
The National Association of Spanish American War Veterans formed the Charles Slade camp in the council chamber with about 30 charter members. Major Feaser presided as local muster with officers elected including Commander Joe P. Hawks and Miles P. Bradford as Senior Vice Commander. Also noted, Eugene Burhans, 51, former Bristol resident and Rock Island and Lake Shore depot station master, died in Chicago of Brights disease after a long local life in Elkhart and South Bend. funeral services were held in South Bend.
All section workers on the Big Four in Niles and nearby stages walk out demanding higher pay. Superintendent Robert H. Simpson visited Niles but failed to settle the dispute. Workers have received 1.15 dollars per day and seek raises. The strike is expected to broaden along the line. The Earnest Gamble Concert company plays at Irwin Wednesday evening April 9 with admissions 50 and 35 cents.

Other obituaries note 13 year old Henry Mott’s fatal lockjaw and Elkhart engineer Edward E. Peffer’s fall. Federal officials in Indianapolis monitor Elk hart counterfeiting case.
Goshen High School baseball opened their season with a 6 0 loss to Bronson Hall at Notre Dame. Boulton and Witt starred for Goshen as Witt nailed two runners at second and Boulton fanned a Bronson Hall batter with a man on third. Roscoe Cornell made a running catch and R B Kelly’s fielding aided the defense. Bronson Hall will visit Goshen for a rematch on May 24 with Prof. Hinkle Fred Nymeyer and Kenton Bowser in attendance.
Walter Whiteside, tragedian, becomes a member in good standing of the bankruptcy club after Judge Adams approved his $25 relief for filing papers. Rogers & Krutz helped bring him to Goshen. he hails from Wabash. Prof. Hering at Notre Dame is praised by students and faculty as a Democratic congress candidate. Mrs. John Breaton, Goshen resident and sister of Mrs. Emous, dies. funeral planned at Oak Ridge cemetery.
Mr and Mrs John D Goodrich longtime South Bend residents mark their fifty third wedding anniversary. Mrs Goodrich is among the last surviving daughters of Revolutionary soldiers in Indiana born to a 72 year old father. The article notes her Vermont-born father and family lineage.

A petition signed by 105 residents of Luton Noble and Hanna townships asks La Porte County to offer a $10 bounty on each wolf scalp killed in the county. They allege recent wolf boldness has harmed sheep hogs cattle and poultry. Previously a bounty existed but hunters reportedly claimed elsewhere and brought scalps for payment.
Lebanon New Hampshire dispatch reports Chicago actor Guy Durrell who went west to visit a dying father has disappeared. His brother in South Bend knows nothing of his whereabouts. Durrell's fiancee Etta May Winn, Salem merchant's daughter, grieves as wedding invitations have been sent and gifts arrive. She has telegraphed everywhere but hears nothing.
William H. O'Brien, chairman, is in Indianapolis to visit Secretary Reilly for a day or two. The next meeting of the democratic state committee is set for May 22 at French Lick Springs, where democratic editors will also gather. Ex-Governor Stone of Missouri has been invited and is expected to attend.
Eight Wakarusians were arrested Friday and Justice Blachey's court was in session all day. Frank Melvin Frank Morningstar Clem Schwin Ed Overlease and Jasper Lechlitner were fined for assault and battery and Oscar Kline for public intoxication. Two were acquitted and one offender escaped. The town marshal refused to act and Prosecutor Hile was summoned.
