At a joint meeting both boards decided not to hire an outside appraisal firm to equalize tax roles for the school and hospital districts. The hospital board will not proceed with equalization without school board action, and plans target October for accepting bids and using serviceable bonds to cover construction.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development approves a $3,972 yearly grant for five years to assist very low and low income families in Smiley. Three units are assigned including one elderly and two family units. Tenants pay up to 25 percent of income. very low income may cap at 15 percent. Eligible tenants apply at the Smiley Housing Authority or John English Thames’s Kenedy office. Landlords can list units at 314 West Main. Subsidized rents cap at $100 for one bedroom and $131 for a three bedroom, with inspections and monthly landlord checks. Board members include Roland Parker as chair and Executive Director Thames.
The First United Methodist Church will screen the color feature His Land on Sunday September 19 at 7 30 p m according to Rev Warren Hornung The film traces Israel from ancient times to today and follows the prophets words as the nation progresses Cliff Barrows and Cliff Richard co star with Ralph Carmichael songs and scenes through Galilee Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives detailing life and nation building in modern Israel
The Apache Band booster club announces all magazine renewals are accepted and the band earns a percentage. October and November notices qualify. contact the band hall at the high school for credit. Nonlisted publications like National Geographic may also be turned in for a share.
Gonzales High School invites all senior parents planning college entry next year to an orientation night Monday September 21 at 7 30 p m in the school cafeteria. Counselor Mrs S E Glass will answer questions on college entrance requirements and scholarship applications.
Cuero hosts its fifth Turkeyfest and Jamboree on October 9 and 10 with preliminaries Saturday and finals Sunday. Mayor Jack Edgar invites Gonzales to enter a city and business turkey in the Turkey Trot races. Entry requires a turkey and handler or they will be provided. John C. Hamilton chairs the 1976 races and entry blanks are available from Chisholm Trail Western Wear Store.
Christopher Knesek son of Mr and Mrs Stanley Knesek Maurin Community will be honored in a pre game ceremony at 7 15 p m Saturday before the University of Texas versus North Texas State game. He is being honored for Eagle scout status and mothers of Eagle Scouts will be recognized with parents as guests of the university.
The Texas Water Development Board will host 21 public forums starting Friday at 7 p.m. in Houston and Victoria to hear citizen and group recommendations on local and statewide water issues. The series may affect a revised plan after hearings. If Amendment No. 1 passes, bonding would rise to 800 million dollars.
City council meets with Ed Riha Bill Neeley and Bob Sweetser of the State Department of Highways to select a possible 1977-78 Urban System Project with Water Street paving as top priority if Gonzales is included. Final plans for Independence Park upgrade presented and approved with total project cost about 75000 dollars.
R. Doug Lewis is named campaign director for the Ford Dole presidential effort in Texas. John B. Connally, a state campaign chairman, announced the appointment and said a campaign office will open later this week.
The old Gonzales County Jail now houses the chamber of commerce and a small museum. State officials say the site is gaining national attention after a Houston Chronicle article by Leon Hale and coverage in the Gonzales Daily Inquirer. Tourists visit weekly seeking tours of the historic jail.
Preston Van Hanken reports a Gonzales inspired Come and Take It flag will be displayed from Dr. Kit McCoy’s sport cruiser off Hawaii near Kealakakua Kona. McCoy, a Gonzales visitor, requested the flag to wave on special occasions.
Weather brief for Gonzales and vicinity calls for partly cloudy skies with warm temps and possible showers through Thursday. Southeast winds 5 to 10 mph today and Thursday, high near 90, low around 70. Rain chances about 20 percent through tomorrow.
Liz Knandel of the Cost 4-H Club earns a trip to Madison Wisconsin for the National 4-H Dairy Conference. She qualified by winning county district and state contests and is the daughter of Mr and Mrs James Knandel.
