Eleven homemakers and a homemaking student finished a two day pickling workshop May 26 27 at Gonzales High School led by Mrs Boyce Needham and County Extension Agent Mrs Donella Pantel. They prepared multiple pickles and canned 119 pints using proper water bath canning methods.
Rupert Cheatham Reid born January 23 1899 in Gonzales County died at Holmes Community Hospital. Services Thursday at 4 p.m. from First Baptist Church with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Survivors include widow Gertrude Zint Reid daughter Marilyn Farmer son Bryce Reid and seven grandchildren. Memorials to First Baptist Church scholarship fund.
Local Gonzales residents dominated the Chick-Fest cook offs with Mrs. Mike Shaw winning the chicken division earning 200 dollars and a trophy while Maria Eredia took second and Betty Cockcroft third. Egg division saw Mrs. R L Donald top honors with 200 dollars and a trophy as Frank Murphy and H V Fortune followed with 100 and 50 dollars respectively. Open inner tube races awarded Robin Thibodaux 100 dollars and a trophy with Donnie Thibodaux and Tommy Witt also placing. Domino tournament honors went to J M Moody Burns and C L DuBose of Gonzales with 75 dollars, while Louis Kuntschik and Irving Wendwehen claimed 50 dollars and a trophy among 26 teams.
A Gonzales family in crisis needs food or cash donations as the father battles terminal cancer and frequent hospital stays. The mother cares for him while two children aged 12 and 14 rely on a small child support check. Donations may be dropped at Mrs. Jessie West’s Route 1 Box 200 residence or arranged by calling 672-6761.
Waelder hosts a two day homecoming with talent shows flag raising bell ceremony and a packed program. new board members announced and awards planned plus multiple Chick-Fest events including an all girls rodeo stamp and coin show gem and rock show and antique displays.
Twelve 4-H members from Cost Waelder and Gonzales clubs competed in the 1977 Gonzales County Dress Revue held May 26 at Gonzales Junior High School Auditorium. High point winners Charlene Cockcroft Bridgett Merriweather and Annie Llaca will advance to the District 14 Dress Revue in Victoria July 7.
