Fargo lawyers critique a donation subscription for a Golden Valley electric road. They warn the instrument is ambiguous, lacks a known contracting party, risks unenforceability, and could fail to guarantee operation or benefits to subscribers, suggesting the plan may mislead investors and farmers.
There are 280 live farmers clubs in North Dakota as of February 1 per Thomas Coopr ex secretary of the Better Farming section of the North Dakota Experiment station. Clubs are expanding through short practical farming schools set in local schoolhouses and public buildings. Williston hosts a large Williams County short course with about 500 attendees, run by the Williston Commercial Club and County Better Farming association. Dairying dominates talks, with demonstrations in judging feeding and marketing, led by D E Willard of St Paul who predicts a dairy-led revolution for the region.
Grafonola contest conducted by Lee and Rice closes February 15 as prizes are awarded to winners. Many entrants compete with No 27 Miss Alma Kruger and No 64 Mrs Hugh Egan leading weekly. Births noted include several January and February infant counts. Social Hour club to meet with Mrs George McGregor next Tuesday.
Petitions will be filed with Dawson county commissioners within two weeks to create Wibaux county by separating from Dawson. Delays stem from heavy snow hindering canvass trips. Local leaders dispute the proposed county's valuation, with Glendive critics saying Wibaux would be the smallest in the state yet larger than Rhode Island. If western Dawson splits off, Wibaux promoters fear losing viability and press for a timely establishment with Wibaux as the seat of government.
The Beach Chronicle Printing Co owners thank the public for liberal patronage in 1913 and invite broader support for 1914. They express appreciation for Beach business firms that funded ads, urge reconsideration from those who did not patronize, and reaffirm a cooperative mission benefiting Beach and the Golden Valley farmers. Beach defeated Miles City in a 33 to 37 fast game at Miles City Institute on Friday. Beach players James Power Joes Hougen Maurice Gordon Leslie Pire Clyde Peterson C F Smith and Bernard Heath umpired. First half ended 25 to 12, Beach dominated early then faced a late challenge. The Sentinel Butte game is expected to be the next home contest around the 20th.
The farmers' institute opened at the school house Tuesday at nine o'clock. Attendance rose from about 75 on the first day to 100 on the second, then fell to around 75 amid severe weather. G W Randlett of North Dakota Agricultural College and W R Lanzon of the Hettinger experiment station assisted. Tuesday morning the judging of dairy cattle was begun by Lanzon with Randlett following.
The Chronicle Printing Company held its annual stockholders meeting last Friday evening at the Chronicle office. Directors Vince Wicka Anton Rising Albert Schouboe J M Still Herman Wojas or P C Erickson and J W Brinton attended. The 1913 report shows total business 9508.98 with a net gain 3050.60 and a ten percent dividend declared.
E. M. Murphy was arrested this week on a charge of assault with intent to do bodily harm after an incident at the Elliott ranch. Murphy says Chas. Kartes was ordered from the house by Mrs. Elliott and, refusing to leave, was forced out at gunpoint. Kartes was deputized to guard property attacked by the sheriff, and Murphy’s alleged use of a gun followed when Kartes refused to depart. The hearing is set for tomorrow in Judge Rosenberg's court.
A bowling tournament starts tomorrow night at the Baller alleys to choose a Beach team for outside matches. Singles and married men will compete in a series of trials. volunteers must report to have their names entered.
Manning North Dakota February 4 The question whether Dunn County seat will stay in Manning or move to a railroad town looms after a courthouse fire. Residents fear railroad towns may press for the seat, while Manning backers hope for a fall vote to keep the seat, potentially delaying a new courthouse until 1915. U S Commissioner R M Andrews notes readiness to resume final proof hearings in the northern state.
Golden Valley members hosted a roast pig feed at the club rooms on Wednesday drawing about 75 farmers and businessmen. Secretary James Haigh reported a healthy club balance with over 40 dollars on hand, 300 dollars turned over in January, and 100 dollars spent on furniture. The group elected 46 new members, reduced outer-city dues to 50 cents, and planned to install a billiard table.
Citizens criticize the Golden Valley Club while not knowing its inner workings. The letter invites locals to join for 2.50 or lend support, noting the club’s social and developmental aims and its ties to local business leaders. A second notice offers sale or trade of grazing and farming land eight miles from Elevator and R.R. Sprind, with Chronicle inquiry.
