Troop Sergeant Major Edwin Hughes of the Hussars, famed as the sole survivor of the Light Brigade charge at Balaclava, aged near 95, recalls the 1854 battle and his military discipline. He lives with his daughter in Blackpool, enjoys the garden, and relies on a dwindling pension fund supported by Royal Patriotic Fund and the Duke of Connaught’s corps.
