Skye Reminiscence From a War Return to Dunvegan

A Scottish reminiscence recalls a tour of Skye after the Great War with Jamie Scott, a Canadian. On a sunny afternoon a Highlander, Alexander Shaw, greets returning soldiers and recounts Neil McLeod’s death and the Flowers of the Forest. He points out Dunvegan Castle, Flora MacDonald’s tomb, and an emigrant ship voyage to Australia. He expresses hope to return to Skye, leaving the narrator touched by the island’s beauty and memory.

In their first year on the Manning property a rook was felled by a falling limb during timber clearing. The sons carried on the work and much of the land remains in family possession. Descendants of Donald McLeod are numerous and widely dispersed from Barrington to the Clarence River and in other parts of the state. Grafton correspondent HW.R. reports in the Wingham Chronicle.
