Surfacing Main Street Faces Paving Cost Dilemma
At Friday’s Council meeting President and Dr. White reported visits to Newcastle Lime & Convent Co for street paving. A cement penetration trial showed two years of heavy traffic left no wear, but costs ran high. Main Roads Board estimate for Gloucester Street was about £2,500, far above tar’s £500. Water mains along the street prevent concrete paving. thus, council likely to follow Board proposal despite prohibitive expense.
