Artiste No 5 and Early Macleay Settlement Roads
In the early Macleay era a rudimentary road via the Tableland served stock trade as the sole route to market. By 1855 the first bullock dray journeyed from Kempsey to Artdaldale, with McMaugh and partners guiding and provisioning along the Macleay. The narrative covers settlement growth, schools, magistrates, and hardy early families, plus mail routes, clashes, and a fading bush heritage.
