Belt Jimmy Wore on the North Coast Tale of Governors

James Barnes of Mount submitted a belt stolen during the Governors era. Prices fixed for NSW potatoes by Commonwealth Commissioner

The Commonwealth Prices Commissioner Professor Copland fixed selling prices for NSW market potatoes. Last week a maximum of £17 per ton was set for NSW new potatoes and Tasmanian Brownells and Bismarcks. Today’s list includes Western Australian Delawares £16, Queensland new £44, Tasmanian Whitesking and Victorian £18, others £12.

Petrol Licence Cuts and Exceptions in February Schedule

A Syal nay Morning Herald report on January 22 outlined petrol licence changes for February. No cuts will affect Class licences for primary producers and stationary engine licencesNos 22 and 23, while licences for cars used for business and pleasure or business in Classes 2, 4 and 5 will face a 20 percent reduction in July. The new verification schedule took effect January 26, and the Commonwealth Government directed immediate action.

K H Watt of Long Flat faced Crown Solicitor instruction at Wauchope for purchasing motor spirit without ration tickets. Straw Pulp Boosts UK Farm Yields in Straw Feeding Trials

Britain sees excedent results as a new caustic straw pulping process is tested on over 200 farms. Trials at Midland Agricultural College with eight pairs of Deity Shorthorn steers show weight gains of about 179 lb over 71 days, while 20 young dairy heifers gained 118 lb daily average across the trial. National Institute for Research in Dairying reports gains of 148 percent versus untreated straw. Plant for producing straw pulp costs about £30 per site and two batches daily yield 1400 lb from 4000 lb straw, enough to feed 28 animals at 500 lb daily The process could replace part of hay corn or roots in meat and milk rations.

NSW price control crackdown to prosecute 70 country storekeepers

Following a statewide inquiry into complaints by retail purchasers of excessive charges, 70 country storekeepers will shortly be prosecuted for alleged breaches of price control regulations. Complaints of overcharging are rising monthly, with the state average about 300 every four weeks. A Prices Commissioner’s officer noted that rarely more than 30 percent of complaints were actionable.
