Waste of Pasture Growth

Chief Agrostologist J N Whittet warns that surplus pasture growth in good seasons is largely wasted as grazing animals cannot keep up. Coastal districts show rapid paspalum growth, needing mowing or heavy stocking to convert to silage or hay. Northern and inland regions offer ready-made silage fodder from leguminous plants, with risks of waste fueling bushfires.

Petrol storage plan for national needs in Australia

The Government plans to use disused garage petrol tanks for strategic storage of motor spirit. Minister for Supply Beasley said the move allows dispersed storage and rapid draw on. Regulations on 44 and 24 gallon drums will enable immediate access to about 70,000 containers within a month, with 5,000 to 7,000 fourty four gallon drums being produced weekly.

Hunting brumbies endangers life of trainer in bushfire

In Newcastle Herald, a party from Mayfield and Carrington hunted brumbies in the Karuah district. Gold chestnut Silver Sails saved former trainer Danny Edwards from a fast spreading fire while the group rode waggons and horses including Sensible Lilywhite and Barrier Form. Six brumbies were secured, two women and five children joined the trip, with anecdotes of flames, escapes, and camp setbacks.

Minister Lifts Tick Embargo in NSW Regions

The tick embargo on cattle in northern and north western New South Wales is lifted. Stock in the area had been quarantined for months. Minister for Commerce Mr Scully welcomes the move and says compensation will cover loss from arsenical dipping during the eradication campaign in Grafton Maclean areas.
