Australia to Build Merchant Ships at Whyalla and Boost War Industry

The minister for the navy forecasts shipbuilding becoming a leading Australian industry with Whyalla to build merchant ships up to 12 000 tons. If Walsh Island is rebuilt and slips upgraded in NSW Victoria and Queensland, Australia could produce 100 000 tons of merchant shipping annually. War effort orders from Britain and allied trades would create thousands of jobs, with ancillary industries expanding in centres like Wagga Wagga and Maitland as munitions annexes start operations by July.
