Sponge Left In Body Fatal After Hospital Recall

In Sydney two months after an operation, Mrs. Doris Valds Latta 50 of Bullahdelah fell ill. A sponge was later removed from her abdomen at Waratah and she died during a further operation. The coroner ruled death due to heart failure during surgery for peritonitis and bowel obstruction caused by the gauze sponge left from a prior operation. The sponge was left in after the Sydney operation, a finding of negligence but not gross culpability. Several doctors and relatives provided testimony.
