Australia faces coal crisis amid strikes and mechanisation
Australia’s fuel and shipping minister and Senator McLeay argue coal output fell from 11.19 million tons in 1941-60 to lower levels due to strikes, absenteeism, and a push to enforce awards. Machines reduced per-shift output, while push to open new mines and boost rail transport seeks to reverse declines. Senate debates on government plans and union influence continue.
