Ice plunge tragedy on the Plaitsmouth River
Chas Powell, a fisherman living on the east bank, attempted to row home in icy river waters after a day in town. His boat overturned, he clung to its side with a seine ensnaring the craft, and he was swept downstream for over an hour before rescuers reached him. He was treated at Mrs. Mary Edgerton’s home but suffered severe cramps from the cold.
