Fruit Crops Expected Smaller Across United States
Department of Agriculture crop officials say fruit yields will be smaller than last year with only fair crops of apples, peaches, and pears. Late May frosts hurt prospects in several states including Virginia, Michigan, and New York, while June 1 apple condition fell about 10 percent below average. Northwestern states may harvest more apples than last year, but total crop depends on rainfall. California peaches rise due to canning and drying, while most other states face substantially reduced crops, even Georgia as young trees come into bearing.
