Lloyd Wins Second Trial Over Knights of Pythias Clause
In Chicago on June 4 the United States circuit court awarded Jane Wiley Lloyd 3175 dollars in a verdict against the supreme lodge of the Knights of Pythias. The suit challenged an intoxicant clause in the order’s insurance policies after Walter Lloyd died in 1897, with the policy issued in 1889 for 5000 dollars. The supreme judge had refused payment, claiming death due to intoxicants, while plaintiffs argued the clause was not in the policy and was added two years later, a point the court of appeals had reversed earlier as retroactive.
