The Mark Lane Express reports wind and rain may cause serious damage to a large portion of the United Kingdom wheat area. Barley benefits from the weather while oats are unharmed. French wheat output is above average in major provinces at about 42,000,000 quarters. Rye lags, oats exceed by up to 10 percent. Hungary shows a large wheat crop with above average yields expected in North Germany, Saxony, Bavaria, and Silesia.
Sioux Falls Bishop O Gorman had a final audience with Cardinal Rampolla in Rome. They discussed the Philippine situation and the need to select a suitable apostolic delegate candidate, with no name mentioned. He sails from Genoa July 30 on the Hohenzollern, then to Oyster Bay to present the pope's letter and gift to President Roosevelt, before Washington delivery to Secretary Hay.
Washington July 29 Major General Miles picks Colonel John J. Babcock senior colonel in the adjutant general's department as chief of staff to replace retired General Thomas Ward Babcock leaves his post as adjutant general of the Department of California in San Francisco and will report to army headquarters in the near future in Manila city
Berlin July 29 Ernest Fubmas an electrical inventor succeeded Saturday evening in telephoning seven kilometers by his wireless method. The speaking voice was perfectly audible throughout the experiments. Ruhmer plans a larger searchlight to reach forty kilometers but notes the device is large expensive and delicate for commercial use though potentially useful for warships transmitting orders at sea.
Washington reports Consul General McNally states Guatemala no longer uses the silver peso. Paper currency and fractional nickel coins are current with the peso valued around 15 cents in U.S. money. Government decrees reference only to the paper peso, which fluctuates daily. exchange has run about 700 percent premium for U.S. drafts or gold.
A. M. Rothschild, formerly head of A. M. Rothschild & Co. on State Street, shot himself at his home at Thirty seventh Court and Michigan yesterday, causing almost instant death. Acute insomnia, possibly temporary insanity, was cited. He had returned from a six week Minnesota outing and had appeared improved. no prior signs of self destruction were noted.
July 28 Paris reports say many were injured including ten seriously and hundreds arrested after clerical and anti clerical protests over unauthorized religious schools. Crowds filled the boulevards, a student procession was dispersed, red flag demonstrations at the Strasburg statue were broken up, and order was restored by midnight.
In London the Saturday Review reports Prof Thompson’s attack on Marconi patents, claiming an Italian naval officer Solari was the true inventor of wireless telegraphy. The patent office journal notes Marconi seeks to amend his 1901 patent to cover an invention said to be communicated from abroad by Marquis Luigi Solari. Guests May Eat the Bill of Fare. A biscuit edible hotel menu card is described. In Wilkes-Barre warrants issued for striking miners at Nanticoke for larceny and assault on Susquehanna Coal Co employes. one arrest so far. Miner exodus to bituminous districts continues.
A July 28 Paris protest near Premier Combes orders to close schools drew about 15,000 in the Palace de la Concorde and similar numbers on the Champs Elysées. Clericals and anti clericals clashed mildly, many women participated, police kept crowds moving, and mounted guards rescued three well dressed ladies from mobbing by socialist women. The crowd shouted pro liberty and pro republic slogans as efforts to reach the ministry were blocked by police.
A 3000 man force under General Saint Poix Colin moved to oppose General Jean Jumeau supporting M Firmin amid expected decisive action. dispatches from Cape Haytien report Arto Bonite troops marching toward Cape Haytien and Port au Prince forces reportedly defeated at Archadale. Reports also note cholera outbreaks in Astrakhan and ongoing Venezuelan conflicts near Alto de Palma.
Washington reports renewed efforts to settle the Colombian conflict between the government and the New York revolutionary junta. Vargas Santos leads the rebels in New York. Combat is confined to the isthmus of Panama with about 7,000 government troops and 4,000 revolutionaries. Both sides are veteran forces and a battle could cause heavy casualties.
The World reports Colonial Secretary Chamberlain is seriously ill after a cab accident on July 7 with recurring heart problems. Three eminent heart specialists advised against resuming duties, and a secretary statement says his recovery is slower than expected amid lingering health concerns.
On July 28 Oxford Michigan endured the worst storm in its history. A twenty five minute gale from 1 o clock unroofed several houses and blew down Harry Humphrey’s near completion home. Corn wheat and oats were damaged and orchards stripped with farmer losses running into thousands of dollars across a strip from Thomas to Rochester.
In New York on July 28 a Central Federated unions session heard a Milwaukee Federated Trades Council letter urging independent political action. It urged labor to unite for a national movement and to name its own presidential and congressional candidates amid perceived oppression by both major parties.
In Rome Bishop Thomas O Gorman of Sioux Falls sends a letter to President Roosevelt from the pope. The letter thanks Roosevelt for his congratulations and gifts and asks him to accept a souvenir of the pontiff s goodwill. It also notes satisfaction with Judge Taft s negotiated results.
Subterranean rumblings resembling thunder are heard in San Josh Costa Rica and Alejela eleven miles away, suspected to stem from the Poss volcano. The rest of the item notes civic leaders unable to attend a Philippine veterans reunion in Council Bluffs due to prior engagements and reports in Berlin about Emperor William warnings affecting September army maneuvers and private festivities with closed windows.
Report describes enormous spiders in forests of Java with webs so strong a knife is needed. A Munich cathedral resident spider supposedly feeds on lamp oil.
