Into a Boer Snare British Mounted Infantry Disaster
In Pretoria on February 12 a detachment of 150 British Mounted Infantry surrounded a farm house near Kilp River south of Johannesburg where Boers hid. A lone Boer escaped the siege prompting pursuit. The pursuers climbed a kapje and came under heavy fire from three sides. Trapped on a ridge, eight British officers defended with carbines and revolvers until overwhelmed. The force retreated to cover a block house after casualties. Eight officers and ten men killed with several officers and forty men wounded.
