Williams Sentenced to Death for Ore County Killing
Oskaloosa Iowa February 3 Richard Williams colored was sentenced to be hanged by Judge A R Dewey in Mahaska county district court. The execution date is March 13 1902. He was convicted of shooting William Sharper a white man at Buxton mining camp December 8 1901 in a drinking resort. Williams provoked the argument threatened then drew a 41 caliber revolver and killed Sharper. Williams briefly escaped before being captured at Ottumwa and brought to Mahaska for trial.
