Mills County Odd Fellows I O O F Association holds its Third Annual Picnic at Pacific Junction on August 28 1907 with a full program from parade to band concert. Invites all lodges families friends and Rebeccas to attend enjoy fraternal sociability and amusements. Bring baskets watermelons and regalia for parade. Music by Taylors Cornet Band. Robbins Sues R.R. For 7500 Over Land Drainage Losses

H C Robbins sues C B and Q railway seeking 7500 dollars alleging drainage disruption west of Hastings damaged his land. Construction of a new right of way in 1903 shifted embankment south of the old line, eliminating waterway where a trestle stood and flooding low ground, ruin of crops, requiring 50 acres to be receded in 1903 and again this year. He claims permanent damage and seeks 6000 for the land loss plus 1500 for crop ruin and depreciation. Genung and Genung are his attorneys.

Weather Summary Reports Mixed Week Across Districts

Over the past week a slight rise in temperature and humidity accompanied by more sunshine. Fair weather early in the week aided field work. later, showers and heavy storms hit central regions with destructive wind squalls hail and lightning in parts of the southeast. Corn growth favorable though uneven. harvest progressing in northern and western districts with minimal storm disruption. Potatoes pastures and garden crops in excellent condition.

Balloon ascension and base ball tournament noted in Glenwood

The notice mentions a base ball tournament in Glenwood on August 29 30 and 31 with a balloon ascent on Saturday. It also reports political notes about Walter S Smith Roosevelts and Tafts positions and a special train plan for the state fair with a Des Moines bound service from Pacific Junction on August 26 27 and 28. Round trip Glenwood to Des Moines fare is 3.40.

Harness Thefts At Vankirk Farm And Nearby Field

Tuesday night a set of harness vanished from E. H. Vankirk’s farm. Thursday morning Milton Knight, south of Silver City, found harness hidden in his corn field. Investigations show most of Vankirk’s harness and a half set remain unclaimed. A horse fell in a ditch near the spot Wednesday morning. two suspicious men may have hidden the gear before seeking help to free their horse.

Curb and gutter contract awarded for Walnut Street segment

At a recent council meeting the curb and gutter work on Walnut Street from First to Fourth Streets was let to E B Barber. The bid sets $1.33 for six foot gutter and $1.03 for four foot gutter in the residence district. Private contracts may proceed until next Tuesday when a city contract will be signed for remaining work. Plans also target a gutter on Vine Street between Coolridge and Third Streets.

Glenwood Opens Schools September 2 With Delayed Third Ward Start

The Glenwood public schools begin Monday September 2 with the Third ward school starting a week or two later due to repairs. Textbooks should be returned by the 28th and books are being repaired for the new year. L C. Bryan is superintendent and list of teachers by grade and room is included.

The Stranathan infant dies in Center township, funeral at home and Glenwood cemetery.

The Soldiers' Reunion at Silver City runs Wednesday through Friday with ideal weather and a large expected attendance, especially on the final day. Hon. Jno Y Stone opened with a keynote on maintaining a strong naval defense to deter aggression and defend shores, drawing on history and natural competition.
