Reports detail great loss across Naples area as San Guiseppe, Ottajano, and nearby towns suffer deaths and destruction. Lava and ash bury streets, churches collapse, trains derail, and troops attempt relief amid ash four feet deep and widespread evacuation. San Guiseppe, a town of 6000, is nearly emptied with 200 bodies found in a church where a mass was interrupted.
Edwin C Swift of Swift & Co. Chicago died in Boston from pneumonia. His funeral was held at Beverly Farms with fifty honorary pallbearers from related industries and acting pallbearers from St Johns church. The body lies in a receiving vault at Forest Hill cemetery awaiting Mrs Swift’s arrival from Europe.
In a Senate debate Monday Mr. McLaurin urged legislation and Mr. Morgan opposed the rail rate measure. McLaurin supported a court review of Interstate Commerce Commission decisions and staying Bailey amendments on suspending orders. Morgan argued the bill intrudes on state rights and said combating high rates hinges on keeping waterways competitive.
President Roosevelt has received a telegram from John Q. Winder president of the bituminous operators of Ohio proposing arbitration. A duplicate went to President Mitchell of the miners union. At the White House officials said no reply will be sent and none is expected.

Senator Russell A. Alger withdraws from candidacy for the U S Senate citing health reasons. In a letter sent to supporters he expresses gratitude for the state’s honors and the loyal backing received over many years. The announcement comes as the legislature plans to convene on January 1.
The Pioneer Press reports James J. Hill will operate a twin trans continental line from Winnipeg to Vancouver. Five hundred miles are under construction with plans for 1500 miles. The race will pit Great Northern, Canadian Northern, and Grand Trunk Pacific against each other.
Senator Joseph H. Millard told Omaha reporters at the Millard hotel that he intends to seek re election to the Senate and has not changed his mind since last summer. He emphasized little preparation has been done and that his Omaha visit is personal business not campaign work. He added there are many other candidates in the race.
Washington report notes the House approved the national quarantine bill by 202 to 26. It centralizes control of quarantine stations, grounds, and anchorages under the secretary of the treasury and directs selection of suitable coastal sites near the sea coast and Mexican border to prevent yellow fever entry. The measure authorizes a quarantine station at the Dry Tortugas and up to four additional coastal sites as needed.
Berlin judge Adolph Hartmann, a German representative at the St. Louis congress of lawyers, after fifteen months studying U S court procedures and institutions, has issued an exhaustive treaty on American law with practical reform suggestions for German procedures slated for the coming decade. He cites many innovations in the United States as commendable.
Senator McCumber offered amendments to the railroad rate bill. Prohibits rebates with penalties three times the rebate amount. Extends bill to refrigerator and cold storage cars with just and reasonable charges. Requires railroads to own their own refrigerators and cars after 1908. Bars ICC from enforcing rules that curb competition or discriminate among lines and cities.
Lord Fitzmaurice told the House of Lords that the government seeks an end to the outrages against Jews in Russia but believes reform success by the Russian government is the only path to lasting relief. The inquiry concerned whether consular or official reports would be laid before Parliament.

Engineers descended on the hermetically sealed shaft but found no living workers. Women pressed the mouth of the pit demanding rescue and stayed through the night as gendarmes restored order.
More than two hundred delegates from fifty eight countries arrived in Rome for the Universal Postal Congress to be inaugurated on April 7. Edward Rosewater of Omaha Nebraska, one of the American delegates, has arrived. Reforms include reducing international postage to four cents, adopting a universal international stamp, and increasing letter weight to three quarters of an ounce.
At Nagold in the Black Forest Germany the Hotel Zum Tirsch collapsed during a festive dinner. About two hundred people were present. at ten o clock fifty five bodies were recovered and one hundred injured were removed. Twenty are missing and presumed dead as repairs raised the building five feet for more space. The collapse happened during a banquet in praise of the builder and landlord.
Paul Nocquet a French sculptor and aviation hobbyist died during a balloon ascent near Jones Beach on Long Island. His balloon collapsed and his body washed ashore in Bass Creek between Jones Beach and Amityville. Lifesavers had earlier found the deflated craft nearby.
