Manitoba election results show John Diefenbaker's Progressive Conservatives with 110 seats, Liberals 103, CCF 24, and Social Credit 18. No party has a majority. another general election appears likely as frameworks shift and speculation grows about forming a government.
Dr. W A Pommer the Liberal incumbent suffered defeat in the Lisgar contest as results came in from the riding. The opposition claimed a clear win in the local election return.
The Progressive Conservative landslide ends a 22 year Liberal run as nine cabinet ministers fall in the election. Defeated ministers include trade minister C D Howe finance minister Walter Harris defence minister Ralph Campney justice minister Stuart Garson revenue minister James McCann labour minister Milton Gregg veterans minister Hugues Lapointe works minister Robert Winters and associate defence minister Paul Hellyer. Howe loses to a CCF candidate.
Local notes cover the Glenboro 4-H Seed Club picnic at the A. O. McGorman farm on June 7 with 4-H families, sewing club members, games, and a bonfire sing along. Also noted are friendships, confirmations, and visitations among area families ending with Winnipeg connections.
Mr and Mrs G B Campbell of Cypress River Manitoba announce the engagement of their daughter Donna Adele to Leroy Robert Taylor son of Mr and Mrs R T Taylor of 1872 Pembina Highway Winnipeg. The wedding is set for Saturday July 13 at 5 30 PM at Fort Rouge United Church Winnipeg.
The Municipal Office at Glenboro will close from Monday June 17 to Saturday morning June 22 to allow the Secretary Treasurer to attend a Course in Municipal Administration and Public Finance in Winnipeg.
A free tuberculin X-Ray survey is set for July in South Cypress R M and Glenboro village. Residents outside the area may attend at Freesbank Stockton or Glenboro venues on July 8 9 10 with limited times. The notice stresses prompt attendance and emphasizes the survey is free.
On May 20 the Royal Jubilee Rebekah Lodge marked its 22nd birthday. A social hour followed featuring a comedy skit showing a Rebekah’s life from babyhood to age 40. Lois Nordman praised her daughter Helen Peterson as the proud mother, with Edith Burgess as the charming bride and Margaret Young as the matron.
The Royal Commission on Education in Manitoba will begin in July to examine all aspects of schooling below university level. Chairman Dr. MacFarlane, Carleton University, brings extensive experience as teacher and administrator. Members include Mrs. Wood, Brandon. Bro. Bruns, Pro vencher Collegiate. Dr. Cuddy, Sanford. and Mr. Hansen, Winnipeg.
A social committee organized by Mrs. L. Nordman and Mrs. E. Burgess thanks donors of costumes. A memorial service on June 3 paid tribute to three past grand lodge representatives and two Assembly presidents. A family lodge picnic followed on Sunday June 9.
Funeral services were held at Glenboro Lutheran Church for Wilbert Christie who died suddenly at his home farm south-west of Glenboro on Monday morning June 3 at age 55. He leaves three sisters and four brothers plus many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Henry Thornborough, held Tuesday at St. Pauls United Church in Brandon, brought Kiwanis, Life Underwriters, Real Estate board, and church groups together with many citizens. Rev. J C Cronin led the service praising years of faithful community service and quiet faith. St. Pauls choir sang the Twenty third Psalm. Attendees included women’s association members and real estate and life underwriters, with honorary and active bearers listed. Interment followed at Brandon cemetery.
A large gathering of friends and relatives attended the funeral to pay last respects to a well regarded neighbor. Floral tributes reflected the high esteem in which he was held. Rev. J Fredriksson officiated the service with pallbearers G Bridle D Dowd K Wiggett S Josephson J McDonald and J Sholdice serving.
