Weather Views reports a deep cold spell January 18 to 24 with highs near minus 17 on January 18 and a low of minus 39 on January 20. Daily average temperatures were minus 23 by day and minus 33 at night, yielding an overall average of minus 28. Precipitation reached 10 cm. Temperatures ran about 10 below normal.
The Tiger Hills Band Festival held January 21 22 at Glenboro School awarded 8 purple 23 red 19 blue and 3 yellow ribbons. Purple ribbon recipients included Paul Helfter Tracy Leader Susan Helfter Lisa Johnson Brian Clarke Jacquie East Stacey Sigurdson Fraser Hyde and more. Tracy Leader won the Harry Rempel Memorial Trophy and Tiger Hills Band earned the Barker Trophy. The Glenboro School gained the Tiger Hill Music Office Trophy for most total participation. International Camp Scholarships went to Tracy Leader Paul Heister and Brian Clarke with alternates Stacey Sigurdson Fraser Hyde Randy Grift. Air Command Band Concert was cancelled due to bad weather.
Natural Resources Minister Len Evans announced completion of 1981-82 New Initiatives Program projects in Spruce Woods Provincial Park 93 km southeast of Brandon. The work includes 11 km of cross country ski trails, widened snowmobile trails, trail signing, log warming shelters, and a winter skating area with a free skating trail rink and hockey broomball jam pail curling facilities along with maintenance equipment.
The annual Ladies Bonspiel in Glenboro runs January 28 to 31 with thirty six rinks. Play starts at 5 p m Thursday and ends with final games Sunday evening. Trophies prizes reward three events and the First Event winner earns a berth to the 1982 Lady Sahara Bonspiel.
The Glenboro Rovers Liniment League hosts a six team hockey tournament at Glenboro Arena on Saturday and Sunday January 30 and 31. Teams include Wawanesa Treherne Mariapolis Hamiota Headingly and Glenboro. Games start 11:00 a.m. daily with a Social at Kinsmen Hall Saturday evening. Older players over 25 play without body checks or slap shots.
Constituents report scams by untrustworthy contractors under the Canadian Home Insulation Program. Advice stresses verifying listing numbers with the Canadian General Standards Board, calling the CHIP office at 942-2471, obtaining three estimates, and securing a written contract specifying insulation bags and standards. Eligible homes must be built before 1961.
The Cypress River annual Ladies Bonspiel ran January 21 to 24 1982 with seventeen rinks. Wendy Young rink won the first event over Rita Hyrich of Cypress River. Verna Mowat won the second event and Marie Landreville led the third. Prizes went to top teams and special awards were given for first out largest end and most points in early games.уд
