Tigers Meet Crowley In Season Opener Friday

Glen Rose hosts Crowley in the season opener for both Texas Class A football teams in Tiger Stadium at 8 p.m. The Tigers aim for a 10 game schedule with hopes of a 10-A crown and state ranking. Weather Summary: Three Showers Last Week Hit 1.03 Inches

Showers fell Wednesday Sunday and Monday totaling 1.03 inches on the U S Weather Bureau gauge. The first shower measured .10 inches, Sunday afternoon added .88 inches, and Monday evening brought .05 inches. Temperatures ranged from 68 degrees to 98 degrees across the period.

Mrs. Mattie Pruitt Buried in Memorial Service

Funeral services for Mrs. W. B. Pruitt known as Mattie 94 were held at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Hutcheson officiating. She died in Fort Worth Wednesday evening after a lingering illness born in Cleburne in 1874 and was the daughter of James and Susan Holder, married Dr. W. B. Pruitt in 1891.

Alvarado Men Open Lumber Firm This Week

Marvin Stewart and his son Marvin Jr opening Stewart Lumber and Hardware Co in Alvarado in the former Glen Rose Lumber Co building. Mrs. and Mrs. Marvin Stewart Jr will run the store with daughter Kimberly Kay, 21 months, moving in when housing is found. The firm will offer quick delivery and stock up on large building materials as soon as possible.

Glen Rose Schools See Enrollment Rise by Five Students

School enrollment in Glen Rose rises to 577 Monday morning up from last Tuesday with 168 in high school and 399 in elementary and junior high. Supt. J. M. McCroskey says Marilyn Haynes from Stephenville has been hired as the second fourth grade teacher, holding a BS in Elementary Education from Howard Payne College Brownwood. He notes a search continues for an English teacher to split time between junior and high school classes.

Word to Serve as Governor for a Day

State Senator J P Word of Meridian will serve as Governor for a Day on September 20 in the absence of the Governor and Lt. Governor. A banquet in Austin at 7 30 p m follows at the Terrace Motor Hotel Convention Center.

4 H Riding Club Overnight Trail Ride

Four teen riders plus 29 youths participated in an overnight trail ride from the rodeo arena to the Turner Ranch on the Brazos River area. They returned after a 70 mile ride with a vesper service and elected new officers including Gary Boren as president and Kenneth Wood as vice president. A plaque honored Mr. and Mrs. Turner as honorary members.
