Weather recap shows 0.33 inch in two days last week

Official observer T J Davis records two showers totaling 0.33 inches last Tuesday and Wednesday. Monthly rainfall reached 2.98 inches and yearly total 26.50 inches. Temperatures stayed warm above 90F last Thursday after a brief cool spell. Here are weekly high and low readings.

Vehicle Inspection Changes Noted in Texas

The Texas Motor Vehicle Inspection stations adopt a year round schedule starting Sept 1. Inspections due one year after the month on the certificate, with Sept 1969 inspections due Sept 1970. Fee rises from 1.75 to 2.00 to cover new inspection items, including exhaust systems. Repairs are rechecked within seven days at no extra charge. Glen Rose Schools Seek Two Additional Teachers

Glen Rose Public Schools report growing pains with 572 students enrolled on Tuesday, up 40 from opening day last year. Superintendent J. M. McCroskey plans to add one fourth grade teacher and another for junior high and high school to ease crowded classrooms. The Senior Class grew from 18 to 43 students, reflecting the overall surge as teachers and students return after Labor Day.

Willey Buys Hiway Cafe and Property in Glen Rose

Bert Willey announced he purchased the Hiway Cafe along with two houses and a barbershop from Jake Howeth and will take over operations. He plans to create the finest local restaurant and asks public support while moving his family to one of the Willey homes after remodeling. Howeth has moved to Cleburne with no public plans shared.

Oakdale Park Pool and Stand Close for Winter

Oakdale Park Pool and concession stand shut Monday night for the winter season. Park manager Mrs Pete May says trail clubs will rally in the park during fall and winter, but the pool and stand remain closed until next May. She thanks patrons for the past season.

Peanut Growers Voting Ballot On Marketing Self-Assessment

Southwestern Peanut Growers Association mails ballots to determine the fate of the self assessment program. Growers must certify 1968 production to have their ballot counted. ballots with no certification will be nullified. Nine directors will be elected from 16 candidates with write‑ins allowed, ballots due September 24.

Fires Damage Home and Pickup During Week

Firemen battled two blazes this week in a busy period. Mrs. Mozelle Pruitt’s home on Highway 67 suffered extensive damage from an electrical fire, while a Chevrolet pickup belonging to Irby Lowe caught fire in front of the Golden Arrow Cafe, burning the motor and wiring and damaging the hood paint. City water use rises sharply, with June to August consumption up over last year and daily use peaking at 270000 gallons.

Mrs. Porter Returns From Mississippi Vacation

Mrs. W. E. Porter came home Saturday from a trip to Ocean Springs Mississippi to visit granddaughter Mrs. T S Harper and children. The husband is in Vietnam with the U S Armed Forces. She rode out Hurricane Camille with the Harpers and sheltered in a Hattiesburg college dormitory where the Red Cross provided beds and meals. On returning, they found uprooted trees and minor roof damage at the Harper home, mild compared with Biloxi Gulfport devastation.

The Somervell County 4-H Riding Club performed a drill at a CRA-approved rodeo in Granbury on Thursday night and competed in another CRA-sanctioned event in Clifton on Friday night. The group remains in demand for rodeos and parades across the area.

Junior Rodeo a Big Saturday Success in Somervell County
