The paper urges Texas voters to approve a constitutional amendment on September 7 to increase the Senate from 31 to 39. Clyde Sexton says the Somervell County Coon Hunter's Association will host its second annual dog show starting at 11:30 with a barbecue dinner for members. Events include bench shows for fox and coon hounds followed by coon contests and water trials. Judges are Bill Frasier and Frank Turner. Lewis Gresham and daughter Karen vacationed in New Mexico.
Mr and Mrs Gene Simpson expect a baby boy this Friday. They will be in San Antonio Friday morning to pick up the lad born last Saturday, Aug 25, and were notified Wednesday to be ready to accept him into their family Friday.
Sunday afternoon a car driven by Paul Baker of Cleburne sideswiped a car driven by W H Elkins of Dallas on the curve on 144 near Glen Lake Methodist Camp. Officer Speck Strawn estimated $200 damage to Baker’s 1955 Chevrolet and $400 to Elkins’ 1965 Plymouth.
Midway Riding Club of Johnson County hosts the first Dinosaur Round-Up in Glen Rose with 15 to 20 riding clubs. Activities include a Saturday trail ride to Paluxy River tracks, Naughty Follies at Oakdale Park, a courthouse square street dance, and Sunday Play Day with reining, keyhole, and relay events. Trophies donated by local businesses and individuals. no admission charged.
Next Monday September 6 Labor Day will be a full holiday with school dismissed. The First National Bank post office and all city county state and federal offices will be closed. Remaining open firms will follow a Sunday schedule. Other holidays this year include Veterans Day Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
A late Tuesday night storm dropped 0.75 inch of moisture on the area, according to a U.S. Weather Bureau gauge kept by T. J. Davis. Strong winds accompanied the shower.
The Glen Rose Independent School District bought the adjacent church building and lot last week. The old wooden structure will be sold for moving and the campus will expand by two city blocks adding playground space for elementary students.
The hospital roster lists patients admitted Wednesday include Mrs. Herschel Reynolds Miss Bernice Brown Mrs. Cynthia Cornett Mrs. Lydia Overton and several others. A release group for the past week includes Mrs. Julia Hayroth Mrs. Carol Howard Mrs. J. D. Martin and additional names.
Texans vote next Tuesday September 7 on a proposed constitutional amendment to enlarge the State Senate from 31 to 39 members. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Somervell County at six precincts with designated boxes and judges. Officials warn of a potentially light turnout as only this proposition appears on the ballot.
Lynn Mitchell will miss days of school after injuring his right ankle while skating Sunday afternoon. Ligaments and muscles were affected, his mother Mrs. Pat Mitchell said. He will rejoin sixth grade once he masters new crutches.
Mr and Mrs Joe Grimm and their sons moved last week to a newly purchased home in Cleburne The family had been living here while Mr Grimm managed Hunter s Appliance Store in Cleburne The move ends their period of residence in the area where they had settled during his store tenure
Walter Allen was discharged from Memorial Hospital in Cleburne after a stroke. He will return in two weeks for further treatment.
Mr and Mrs L G Tillman closed a deal last week to acquire the O F Boyd residence adjoining their current home. The Boyds left Tuesday for San Angelo to establish residence at Baptist Memorial Hospital.
Bob Summers, a local artist, received a Certificate of Graduation from Art Instruction Schools of Minneapolis Minnesota in illustrating and related art. A letter from Dr A C Pasz Educational Director accompanying the certificate congratulated him and noted his unusual ability shown during the course.
Cecil Wood and his son Kenneth were moving five head of cattle when a trailer hitch failed on a Brazos River bridge. The trailer overturned. six fishermen nearby aided with lights and traffic control until rescuers moved the trailer upright. Cattle were guided to safety and traffic resumed within half an hour.
Bo Pruitt son of Mr and Mrs J O Pruitt Jr won second place with his boat at the Sears 4 H Club Swine Show held in Denton last Friday. Teddy Starnes son of Mr and Mrs Logan Starnes Rainbow took fourth place. Competition was keen with contestants from a 14 county area. Local boys will share 42 dollars in prize money. Attending were Mrs Pruitt Mrs Starnes and Terry.
School Superintendent J M McCroskey reports 472 students enrolled on the first day, down from 473 last year and 477 in 1963, with the sixth grade largest at 58 and first grades totaling 32. Several students may still enroll to approach last year’s total. Pam Gibbs, daughter of Mr and Mrs G C Gibbs Jr, visits before attending Baylor University in the fall.
