Harkom Sentenced Then Probated in Fort Worth Case

Harvey Harkom of Fort Worth pleaded guilty in the 52nd District Court to a charge tied to a 14 year old Glen Rose girl. He received a seven year penitentiary sentence probated by Judge Penn Jackson, with prior jail time and a July 9 incident, escape, and return detailed in the same session.

Community tennis court rises in Glen Rose

Charles Gibbs sponsor of the Glen Rose High School National Honor Society chapter says the new tennis court near the town is nearing completion after topping with asphalt by Meadow Autrey for 300 dollars. Next, Drake Fence Co. will install an eight foot chain-link fence for 250 dollars while lighting remains unfunded and contributions are urged to Gibbs.

Glen Rose FFA Teams Win Contests Across Divisions

Ninety boys in 22 teams competed in the Bosque Soil Conservation District land and range and pasture judging contests. Glen Rose FFA led with three of four firsts and multiple runners up, with top individuals Seldon Taylor Jeffery Pruitt and Larry Shackelford. Awards were presented by M. G. Mack McConal in Glen Rose.

Local bootlegger fined for beer sales in dry territory

A Somervell County man pleaded guilty to two counts of selling beer in a dry area and one count of illegal possession. Judge Temple Summers fined him 390 dollars in County Court after a raid by Sheriff Speck Strawn and State Liquor Control Board agents.

Glen Rose residents warned on new garbage cans rule

City officials warn residents that December 1 is the deadline to replace heavy oil drums with regulation garbage cans lest home trash collection be interrupted. The ad notes the large containers are hard for one person to lift and the local truck is operated by a single worker.

Commissioners Here Complete Projects in Somervell County

Somervell County commissioners aided several local projects. Er J. Norman provided caliche for an asphalt community tennis court beside the Community Center, Meadow Autrey built the court for the high school National Honor Society. M S Teague supplied gravel for the football field entrance and parking area. C D Barnett extended a portion of Third Street just outside city limits.

Legion Calls Return of Post Rifles

At a Legion meeting of the Oliver Windell Buzan Post No 462 it was voted that all rifles owned by the post be turned in to Commander James V. Aiey. Officers say these ceremonial guns were never meant to be kept by members all the time.

Church Seeks List of Servicemen in Glen Rose

Members of First Baptist Church in Glen Rose seek area servicemen to compile a mailing list for Christmas gifts and reading material. Residents are asked to provide names and addresses of men in the U S Armed Forces, including those overseas, to pastors Rev Haywood Kube or Sam Freas. Names need not be from Somervell County.

Stolen Motorcycle Recovered and Altered Trade Arranged

Arthur Butterfield of Vernon was returned after capture by Vernon officers on theft and parole violation charges. He allegedly traded a motorcycle he stole to Harvey Jackson for a 1955 Pontiac. The motorcycle was recovered in Marshall and turned over to Sheriff Speck Strawn. Butterfield was jailed in Cleburne after a Vernon burglary and parole violation hearing and will be released to Marshall authorities for arraignment.

Jackrabbits Beat Tigers 39-6 In Bi-District Play

Forney’s Jackrabbits dominated Glen Rose at Cedar Hill Stadium racking up 320 rushing yards and 19 passing yards while holding the Tigers to 70 rushing and 164 passing. Forney advances to the state playoffs. Glen Rose ends 8-3. Lead for Forney came from Larry Bush and Tom Cheney with Sammy Beeler and Ricky West adding key runs. Ben Nieckell threw for 148 yards with Shackelford grabbing 112 yards on eight catches.

Visitors Registry at Somervell Museum Reaches 2373

Wayland G. Adams, president of the Somervell County Historical Society, said 2373 people have registered at the local museum since its spring opening. Registrants hailed from nearly all states and several foreign countries. The society hosts about three tours weekly to Dinosaur Valley tracks along the Paluxy River, with groups of six to 75 from out of town, boosting weekend tourist revenue for Glen Rose merchants. He invites local business owners to join the society for 15 per year to sustain the promotional effort.

Two Stolen Autos Found In This Area

Two stolen cars were located in the area over the past week. A 1961 Oldsmobile stolen in Fort Worth Nov 7 was found near Eulogy in Bosque County by Sheriff Speck Strawn. The car, driven left of a cliff above Hill Creek, was a total loss with no items missing. owner listed as F. R. Commander of Fort Worth. A 1952 Ford found at Gibbs Roadside Park on the Stephenville highway west of town was stripped and burned. owner unknown as plates burned. Strawn sent the motor number to Austin to establish ownership.

Tigers Sweep All-District Honors in 13-A Football

Glen Rose Tigers dominate district selections with eight spots on offense and defense. Honorable mention goes to seven Tigers, led by Hank Pruitt who earned a spot on both teams. District coaches named offensive ends Pete Cook Whitney and John Shackelford Glen Rose, guards Jim Thompson Clifton and Pruitt, back Bennie Nickell Glen Rose, and others. Defensive selections include A. J. Redden Itasca and William Gartrell Glen Rose, with Pruitt again on the list. Several Glen Rose players also earned honorable mention on both sides.
