The Glen Rose Tigers defeated Meridian Yellowjackets 31 0 in a lopsided 13 A district finale. Bennie Nickell starred with an 80 yard kickoff return for a TD and 102 passing yards as the Tigers roll toward bi district vs Forney at Cedar Hill Stadium Friday night.
School Superintendent J M McCroskey said the recent homecoming, held Friday and Saturday, was the most successful since his tenure. The Class of 1917 was honored with eight of nine members in attendance, including Judge Cecil C Collings and Dr Otis English among others, with ceremonies at the high school and a Meridian Yellowjacket Band concert. The football game featured a Spirit Award presentation for Bob Miller and Homecoming Queen Becky Dempsey crowned at halftime.
Thirty six Somervell County citizens received summons for petit jury duty in the 52nd District Court as Harvey Harkom of Fort Worth faces trial on charges of statutory rape involving a Glen Rose girl. Harkom, jailed on a $5,000 bond, escaped July 15 and surrendered Sept 11. he remains in jail in lieu of bond. The list of summoned jurors includes Mrs. George Norman and J. E. Shackelford among many others.
Forney carries 10-0 record and top state class A polls into a Friday night clash with Glen Rose at Cedar Hill Stadium. Texas press notes highlight QB Benny Nickell, RB Jerry Drake, FB Ricky West, WB William Gartrell, and Bob White guiding a potent Tigers offense, with Shackelford and Elliott keying the passing attack and special teams.
Thanksgiving will be a full holiday in Glen Rose on Thursday the 24th with almost all firms closed and remaining open on a Sunday schedule. Local schools dismiss Wednesday afternoon and resume Monday morning to allow families a long weekend. The last holiday of the year is Monday December 26 due to Christmas falling on Sunday.
