In the 11th Texas District Poage won reelection by the largest margin among incumbents and Preston Smith was elected Governor. The piece endorses Poage and Smith as choosing sane leadership amid widespread protest.
A group of 56 businessmen met at Glen Lake Methodist Camp to hear SBA representatives outline steps to finance and build a modern clinic and hospital on property owned by Dr. R D English and Dr. Roger Marks. Proposed project cost about 350000 dollars with 10 percent locally pledged. a lender has agreed to 70000 dollars and 35000 from locals, leaving 245000 to be financed by SBA. An industrial foundation to provide local financing was approved and to be organized by Howard English and J E Ward, with further meetings planned.
Congressman W. R. Bob Poage of the 11th District will be the featured speaker at the Glen Rose Somervell County Chamber of Commerce dinner at Glen Lake Methodist Camp. He will discuss the recently closed congressional session and share views on the next session under President-elect Nixon.
Certificates of appreciation from President Johnson will be presented to two Hood Johnson Somerville County draft board members in Cleburne. Eugene G. Connally of Glen Rose and Cecil R. Lanham of Tolar will be cited for 20 and 15 years of uncompensated service respectively and receive lapel emblems for their governmental service.
The R. B. Spencer Scholarship Fund, memorial for a local WWII pilot, has risen from 228 to 403 dollars this week. Contributors include Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Thompson, Temple Summers, J. E. Ward, Dr. and Mrs. W. E. Meaders, Bob Gibbs, and others.
Formal opening of the Food Center by David Waldrip observed this week as part of a gala advertisement in the Reporter. Waldrip owns the new grocery, member of Affiliated Grocers, moved from Milford, and operates a 50 by 100 foot masonry building on square northwest. Sales prices and added features run through next Wednesday, with the store said to be modern and a boost to Glen Rose’s business district.
Ranger's 19 to 6 victory over Glen Rose keeps the Bulldogs undefeated in District 10 A action with one game left and a playoff berth in sight. Ranger rushed 229 yards to Glen Rose's 117 and dominated 16 first downs to 12, while four Ranger interceptions and six Tiger fumbles shaped the outcome. The Tigers, 2-2 in league play, can still reach .500 with a win over DeLeon. The contest was played in muddy near freezing conditions before a small crowd.
Mrs. Charlie Moss chairs the Somervell County Historical Society Kountry Fair set for Saturday at the society building on the courthouse square from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The event features games, rides, photo opportunities, popcorn and locally made goods, all with a traditional country flavor. Sam Freas notes donations are tax deductible and receipts issued.
