Opening of Tourist Season Praised at Oakdale Park

Officials of the Chamber of Commerce hail a successful weekend led by Whimp and Pete May owners of Oakdale Park. More than 750 visitors boosted local business and the event featured Sinclair Oil Co. promotions including a Brontosaurus replica.

Primary Ballot Totals Tallied in Somerville County

In Somerville County the First Democratic Primary produced 575 voters on Saturday. County Judge Temple Summers led with 406 votes. Incumbents won reelection in contested County Commissioner Precincts 2 and 4. M. S.

Rev Jones to Leave First Baptist for Fort Worth Church

Rev Sam Jones, pastor of the First Baptist Church here since last August, will preach his final sermon Sunday before moving to Glen View Baptist Church in Fort Worth next week. He and his wife and two sons moved to Glen Rose from De Kalb and have pastored in Bowie Jefferson Atlanta and Ore City. A native of Oklahoma, he grew up in Temple and Dallas and attended Decatur, Dallas and East Texas Baptist Colleges.

Burglars Strike Area Ranch Home

Burglars broke into J. D. Gamel’s home on Broken Arrow Ranch, southwest of town, between Friday evening and Sunday morning. Entry was gained by prying a window. A portable TV and a shotgun were stolen. the gun had been stolen from the home before and later recovered by Sheriff C. M. Speck Strawn.

Arson Charges Lodged In Residence Fire Case

Mary Torres Bone faces arson charges filed Monday by Sheriff C M Strawn and others. She admitted starting the blaze at the family home after local Fire Department saved nearby houses. bond set at 1000 and she was jailed in Cleburne. The home suffered total loss with few possessions saved.

Dinosaur Valley State Park Sets Day Use Rules

In a Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission meeting last Tuesday, Dinosaur Valley State Park will open for day use starting July 1 with summer hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. An entrance fee of $1 per car will apply daily. Overnight camping, mini-bikes and off-trail vehicles are not allowed at this time.

Soil and Water Banquet Set for Region V in Glen Rose

The 25th annual Region V Soil and Water Conservation Program will gather Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Glen Lake Methodist Camp dining hall. M. G. Mac McConal serves as master of ceremonies. Hosted by Bosque and Upper Leon SWCDs and Glen Rose Somervell Chamber of Commerce. Tickets at $3 are available from the Chamber, First National Bank, or Glen Rose Reporter.

School Receives Partial Funds From Federal Aid

J. M. McCroskey announced the local school system received 3174 dollars in federal aid under Public Law 874. The payment covers 30 percent of the 10800 dollar claim for the year, with no further payments until the 1971 budget year and no more than 70 percent then. The board had anticipated a reduction and budgeted 6000 dollars from this source.

Opening of Tourist Season Draws Record Crowds

The weekend festival drew the largest turnout in 20 years with 19 trailer clubs totaling 185 mobile units at Oakdale Park. More than 750 registered, a Glen Rose Tiger Band led parade, and 350 trailerites attending Sunday campfire church services concluded a bustling Open Travel Rally.
