Local Glen Rose duo head to state track finals

Willie Hart and Billy Mitchell will represent Glen Rose at the state track finals after winning regional titles at Den ton. Willie took shot put in 46 ft 2% in, Billy captured the 880 yd run in 2 rink 25.9 sec. Both seniors are retiring from high school competition.

May List Highlights Dairy Products and Spring Vegetables

The U S Department of Agriculture names May as the smallest plentiful foods list in a decade with two main categories dairy products and spring vegetables dominant. Production runs ahead of last year with output rising about one billion pounds while prices sit at seasonal lows. Cold weather in Florida and the South delayed vegetables forcing replanting and later markets.

Glen Rose Students Shine At District Literary Meet

Glen Rose High School students excelled at the district literary meet in Waco. Top honors went to George Stout and William Wood in Number Sense and to Barbara Teague and Margaret Meaders in Spelling. Joyce Armstrong placed second in shorthand while Betty Lou McIntire finished fourth in shorthand.

Raymond Bunt's Station Burglarized Again

Sunday night April 27, Bunt's Premier Station on the highway was robbed of about 75 dollars in goods. A phileo, radio, cigarettes, and two tires were taken. Thieves broke into the rest room and chipped a hole in the sheet rock wall with a screwdriver to gain entry. This is the second burglary in three weeks.

Airmen Assigned to Lowry Technical School Programs

Airman Chester R Raifsneider and Airman Dennis Marshall Reynolds, both sons of Texas residents, have been assigned to the 3415th USAF Technical School at Lowry Air Force Base. Raifsneider attends the Armament Systems Maintenance School, Reynolds the Munitions and Weapons Maintenance School. Lowry graduates thousands of airmen annually and assigns most upon completion.

Rainfall totals rise with weekend storm in 1957

Over the weekend more than two inches of rain brought the year total to 12.80 inches with 2 inches falling Saturday and 1.85 Sunday night. Saturday night’s shower included marble sized hail for a few minutes. April rainfall reached 5.37 inches and 1957 year-to-date stood at 10.22 inches. Additional hail and 1 inch of rain fell Wednesday morning.

Boy Scouts Reorganizing In Glen Rose Meeting Held

The Glen Rose Boy Scouts formed a reorganization meeting with named patrol officers including Warren Marks and Russell Moore. A Scoutmaster is not yet named and adults over 21 are urged to contact Paul Bone. All boys 11 and older invited to the next assembly at 7:30 p.m. at the Agriculture Building.

Cancer Drive to Start in Somervell County

Tom Voss, chairman, says the annual Cancer Drive will begin within a week. The county quota is $250, with plans for raising the quota to be announced later.

The district meet for grade school and high school volleyball took place Thursday afternoon in the Glen Rose gym. Clubs Clifton Glen Rose Moody and Mc Gregor entered. Results will be announced next week.

Glen Rose Chamber of Commerce president M. G. McConal Mrs Ann Moss and Mr and Mrs George Day attended the 40th West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention in Fort Worth. The Star Telegram published a photo of George and Shirley Day with Curly Hays Abilene agriculture representative of West Texas Utilities Company. The group says the visit yielded valuable information for Glen Rose to present at the May 13 C of C meeting.

Fire destroys Jodie Reynolds home

A morning blaze of undetermined origin completely destroyed the unoccupied home of Jodie Reynolds around 3 30. Reynolds had recently moved to Weatherford. The fire occurred Wednesday morning and caused total loss.

City Council Sets Regular Meeting Time

The City Council approved a monthly meeting time on the first Monday night. They accepted the resignation of City Marshal Covington effective May 1 and appointed Howell Kenner to serve until May 1 in Covington’s absence. Charles Gibbs was elected mayor pro tem.

State Fair Musicals Open in Dallas With Auntie Mame

The seventeenth summer season of State Fair Musicals opens in Dallas on June 9 with Auntie Mame, a current Broadway hit. The lineup includes Oklahoma, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Guys and Dolls, The Most Happy Fella, and The King and I. Each show runs two weeks in the air conditioned State Fair Music Hall.

Mrs. Tomassie Sparks Dies at 84 in Glen Rose

Mrs. Tomassie Sparks 84 native of Johnson County died here Sunday at 2 a.m. after an extended illness. Born October 30, 1873, she moved to Glen Rose ten years ago. Services were held at Georges Creek Tuesday at 2 p.m. burial in Georges Creek Cemetery. Survived by five sons, one daughter, 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were nephews Odell Norton, Aaron Bedwell, J. D. Armstrong, Isam Findley, King Norton, and Marley Norton. Preceded in death by husband in 1938.

J. O. Musiel, general manager of the Texas Safety Association, urged Texans to back a state wide Slow Down and Live campaign from Memorial Day to Labor Day. He blamed human error for most traffic crashes and urged voluntary compliance with speed limits and traffic laws to reduce deaths and injuries.
