The polio season has begun and the National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis promotes the Salk vaccine as the best precaution. Texel is highlighted as one of ten states with high polio incidence and residents are urged to seek protection now.
Bill Oxford found a rock from a fence row near Rock Creek containing embedded rattles that appear to be turned to stone. The discovery presents a remarkable petrified feature with preserved snake parts.
Report notes crowd support and new results from the Livestock Show and Quarter Horse Show. Mentions thanks from Bill Cowan Doyle Cooper and honors for Mack McConal Eugene Connally Dr Irvine Jack Bridges and many others for their roles in the events.
Mrs. W. H. Wood known as Aunt Mollie died last Thursday in Shamrock at age 95. She was mother of A. D. Wood of Glen Rose. Two grandsons wrote a life story with many incidents and promise to publish more next week.

Glen Rose Public Schools announces fourth six weeks honor rolls led by high and middle grades over 90. Notable names include Carol Holden Marquis Verlyn Lee Janette Eddy Louella Bivens Betty Ann Martin Janice Early Clara Jeanne Winston Willie Hart and George Stout among many others.
Edna Childress became the bride of J. E. Hatchett last Friday night at the bride’s sister Mrs. W. D. Nowlin’s home. Rev. George Greebon officiated with local family members attending. The couple will reside in Sentinel.
The Chamber of Commerce honored two citizens at its quarterly banquet. Mr Miller received the Outstanding Citizen Award, while another recipient was recognized for similar service.
Texas Highway Patrol and Somervell County Attorney announce tougher traffic enforcement. Patrols from Cleburne will conduct roadblocks and step up monitoring of licenses and vehicle inspections to cut accidents and save lives and property.
Engagement announced for Dovie Ann King of Kress and Jerry Gilliland of Glen Rose. Wedding set for April 27 at First Baptist Church, Kress. Miss King is a Kress High School and San Jacinto Beauty School graduate and works at Willie Mae's Beauty Shop, Plainview. Gilliland is a Glen Rose graduate employed by Cooper Pontiac Co, Plainview.
The ballot for the school trustees race grows with new entrants Phil Woodruff and H. A. Hunter joining. Already announced are Dr. R. D. English Ruby Lane and Bill Lemens from the current board. Four seats are open and the election is set for Saturday April 6 with a March 26 candidate deadline.
Rain report shows .85 inches in REPORTER gauge from Sunday night into Monday morning. Rock Creek Georgia Creek and Rainbow areas recorded .4 to .45 inches. No severe wind or lightning occurred despite area storm warnings.
Mrs Lela Edmiston sister of Mrs R C Leach and a Glen Rose native died Sunday March 3 in Chickasha after a heart attack. Burial followed Tuesday March 8 in a Chickasha cemetery. She is survived by her husband four children and one sister Mrs R C Leach.
Leroy Chandler received two six year sentences for robberies at two service stations and six additional years from Johnson County plus two six year terms from Erath County. He is concurrently serving and remains under indictment in Bosque County.
About 1500 spectators attended the first annual Quarter Horse Show on March 2 with 54 entries from 23 owners and one foreign country. Grand Champion Stallion Honey Karnes owned by J. D. Karnes of Fort Worth. Reserve Stallion My Hired Hand from Silver Cyeel Ranch, Fort Worth. Grand Champion Mare exhibited by H. K. Teher of Dallas. Reserve Mare Latest Fashion owned by Paul Huffman Weatherford. Grand Champion Gelding Coley Al of A. A. Allen Saginaw. Reserve Gelding Major Mac of M&M Ranch Milford. Get-of-Sire Wales King and Produce of Dam Lady Romeo also noted with owners in Milford and Weatherford references.
The District Singing Convention will be held here Saturday and Sunday March 23 and 24 in the Agriculture Building on Highway 67. Organizers Floyd McBride Bill Tiwater and Arlie Cheek expect 500 to 600 attendees with quartets and soloists present. A basket lunch is requested as dinner is served on Sunday.
Mrs William W. Rice born March 18 1894 died March 8 1957 at 62. She was daughter of George and Mrs Pugh Edom Texas married 1911 had 6 sons and 7 daughters. Funeral at Pentecostal Church Morgan with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery Walnut Springs. Survived by five sons two daughters three brothers fourteen grandsons and thirteen granddaughters.
Mr and Mrs Wendell Rozelle are the proud parents of Lina LuAnne born Friday night at 9 o clock at Marks English hospital. She weighed nine pounds and a half.
Joe M Worley is added to the Community Public Service Company division staff to assist in sales and load building. He will be headquartered at Clifton with activities spanning over a dozen towns and communities in Central Texas.
About 40 to 45 Class A and B track teams from Central Texas travel to Glen Rose for the 4th annual Tiger Relays. Roughly 450 to 500 participants expected. prelims at 9:00 AM and finals at 2:00 PM. H. A. Sanford of Tarleton State to officiate, Jim Ben Watson of Joshua HS as clerk of the course. A 200-pound class Fat Man's 100 event draws interest. Teams listed include Abbotts, Albany, Alvarado, Archer City, Bangs, Boyd, Bynum, Clifton, Granfield Gap, Crawford, Chilton, and Glen Rose host. director James Willngam.
Public School Week was very successful in Glen Rose Schools this year. Superintendent J. M. Mc Criskey thanks visitors and helpers. 352 parents visited their children’s rooms, 5th grade led by Mrs. McDonough had the largest parent turnout, 23 children drew 27 attending dads and mothers, 319 guests used the lunchroom, and 483 total visitors joined the week. Enrollment stands at 874.
