Somervell County communities thank volunteers who fought grass and timber fires across the region saving homes and Dinosaur Valley State Park. Dinosaur Days events set for July 4 5 and 6 include horse and mule races a large parade rodeo pageant pet show and street dance.
A grass and timber fire near Lanham Mill Friday darkened about 800 acres with smoke seen up to 50 miles away. Fire units from Glen Rose and eight towns fought until dusk, then local volunteers continued through the night. A second blaze near Dinosaur Valley State Park burned 50 acres. Fires spread to fences and poles. losses included land parcels, a home in Nemo, and park facilities. Officials urged extreme care amid dry conditions.
County Agent Doyle Cooper said the Texas Animal Health Commission notified him that the first confirmed screwworm case in Somervell County since 1960 was reported last week by M C Rheinlander. An additional case was found south of Weatherford and another in Johnson County amid concerns over northward fly migration due to high spring winds. Dale Wade of the commission drop fed sterile flies in the area as an aerial drop is planned next week. Livestock raisers are urged to avoid handling animals with open wounds and to send worm samples to the commission. Keep a close watch over your livestock.
The Glen Rose area stayed dry with a welcomed cool front lowering temperatures Monday and Tuesday. National Weather Service observer Robert Mack notes a trace of moisture Sunday and afternoon temps near 100 degrees. Mack presents the weekly report.
Somervell County commissioners met to approve a low bid of 3872 dollars from Durant Chevrolet Co. of Granbury for a 1974 Chevrolet Impala to serve as a county sheriff patrol car. Two other bids were received.
Homeowners in Somervell County are warned that elm tree beetles have been highly active this past week. Property owners should inspect trees for small worms on leaves and trunks and spray with Malathion or Sevin promptly to prevent leaf loss and tree damage.
Three nonfatal crashes reported with no injuries. A Cleburne run-in with a yearling calf near the Brazos River bridge caused heavy damage to C. W. Howell's pickup. A Dallas man, Raymond B. Siegle, collided with Doyle Gilley near Highways 67 and 144 with light vehicle damage. Michael Linch and Ector Yzaguirre collided at Farm Roads 199 and 200 in front of New Prospect Baptist Church. Linch cited for failure to yield. both vehicles heavily damaged.
Glen Rose Somervell County Volunteer Fire Department will stage a fish fry at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Butler on Friday July 5 at 6 30 p m All members of the department and their families are invited and urged to attend and enjoy fish and all the trimmings along with good fellowship.
Chamber of Commerce President Carroll Gann reports plans for a three day July Fourth celebration in Dinosaur Days with horse and mule races at Dinosaur Downs on Ed Mimms place north west of town starting Thursday at 2:00 p.m. A 7 p.m. baseball program, a gala parade Friday, a pet show Saturday at 10 a.m., a Little Miss pageant, rodeo performances, and a street dance wrap up the weekend.
Bennie Ice of this city paid a 27.50 fine and posted 2,500 bond after an alleged 3 00 a m courthouse altercation. He pleaded guilty to consuming alcoholic beverages in public and resisting arrest by Deputy Sheriff Dennis Williams. Ice was released after posting bond and the case proceeds to the Somervell County Grand Jury. On Thursday night 11 30 p m Williams jailed S A Jackson for orderly conduct and he was fined 27 50 in Justice Court.
