Somervell Delegation Reflects On San Antonio Democratic Convention

The Somervell County delegation returned to Glen Rose after attending the State Democratic convention in San Antonio. Delegates faced long lines for credentials as 3,900 participants waited. the session started at 1:30 after a 10 a.m. opening. Campers and Hikers Rally At Oakdale Park Fort Worth

About 900 members of the National Campers and Hikers Club will gather at Oakdale Park Fort Worth for a state rally hosted by Cowtown Campers. 182 families already preregistered. Events include Miss Texas National Camper and Hiker competition with talent swimwear and evening gown portions. Saturday afternoon activities plus church services Sunday at 10 30 a m with Rev Dennis Baw delivering the sermon and music by the New Hope Trio of Dallas.

McCarty and Hornsby Attend State Democratic Convention

Jack McCarty of Somervell County attended the State Democratic convention in San Antonio as the sole Somervell delegate. Alton Hornsby of Callahan County was among six delegates. They returned Tuesday night with Hornsby resuming residence in Cross Plains Wednesday morning.

Herman Davis Rites Pending in Cleburne

Herman T. Davis, 71, longtime Glen Rose resident, died after a long illness in Cleburne Hospital. Services and funeral arrangements were incomplete as the Reporter went to press.

Fires Damage Two Homes In Wednesday Blazes

Fire of undetermined origin badly damaged a two story residence on College Street owned by Mrs Eleanor Ramsey and later a second fire at the home of Mr and Mrs Jimmy Burch on Highway 67 caused by a defective hot water heater vent. Neighbors aided in the Burch evacuation with no injuries and no damage to adjacent properties.

Williams sets rapid pace in Cleburne Pitch Hit Throw

Larry Williams, 12, broke the Cleborne District record with 519 points in the Phillips 66 contest in Cleburne winning the 12 year old division. Other results include Danny Chambers 239 for seventh, Bill Vineyard 317 for fourth in 11 year olds, Jeff Dugger 210 for seventh, David Simpson 294 for third in 10 year olds, James King 284 for fourth, Damon Brooks 238 for sixth, Glen Schuelke 200 for eleventh. Williams to receive plaque and head to Arlington Stadium for regional competition Saturday.

Students Score High In Reading Tests At Glen Rose

Students in grades four to six at Glen Rose Elementary showed strong reading results in a statewide Metropolitan Reading Test. Forty percent ranked in the top quarter nationwide and another thirty five percent scored above the national average. Ben Luttrell's sixth grade class led local results.

City approves used garbage truck purchase and asphalt supply

Councilmen voted Tuesday to buy a used garbage truck for 1900 dollars and trade in the old unit. They also approved a five year supply of pre mixed asphalt at half current market price. E H Gaither reported Line of Abilene claims city street encroached on Line property in the west part of the city.

Screwworm Sample Containers Available

County Agent Doyle Cooper says he has a supply of containers for mailing suspected screwworm samples. Livestock owners may pick them up at his office and are urged to watch their stock closely and collect samples of all suspected cases.

Rainbow Baptist Church Celebrates 75th Anniversary

More than 200 members and friends gathered for Rainbow Baptist Church’s 75th anniversary. A record 107 attended Sunday School with many staying until the event ended about 3:30 p.m. Dita Marsh, the oldest member since 1902, and M. M. Bunt, who joined in 1903, were notable early attendees. The program featured church choirs, missionary Rev. Bill O’Brien from Indonesia, and a film showing of The Return.

Two weeks into summer baseball Oakdale Park's Little League sits undefeated at 3–0.
