Community recovers after minor tornado damage and local cheer

After a brief, wide storm last Saturday evening about 6 30 residents report only a single minor injury. Ora Hickey a Brady resident and former local to the area is praised as Champion Gardener. A humorous family anecdote from the Summers highlights child logic.

Severe storm laces county with tornadoes hail and flooding

Wild weather battered the area with heavy rain up to 2 inches in 20 minutes accompanied by damaging hail and suspected tornadoes. Lanham Mill and several homesteads suffered extensive damage including overturned trailers and blown roofs. Rivers of rain totaled 3.08 inches in the storm, 3.45 for the week, 4.65 for May, as power and phones failed in parts.

Quarter Horse Show Held Here Sees 139 Entries

Bill Pruitt, superintendent of the 15th Annual Quarter Horse Show, reports 139 entries across two divisions. He cites weekend storms for the lower turnout with 43 entries in the Youth Activity Show on Sunday and 96 in the Quarter Horse Show on Monday. Complete results will appear next week in the Reporter.

Summer programs offer pre school and adult classes

Pre school sessions run six weeks at Elementary School from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday and 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday to Friday under Mrs. Karl Booker and Mrs. Wallace Dove. Adults study daily Tuesday to Friday for two weeks with topics from snakes to home safety guided by Mary Mayo and others. High school homemaking provides babysitting service for attending mothers.

Students Named on Final Honor Roll at Glen Rose

A total of 61 Glen Rose students appear on the final six weeks honor roll with 33 in grades 4-8 and 29 in high school. Honors span fourth through senior classes listing multiple named students and teachers including Hale Riddle and Charles Gibbs.

Seventeen individual awards were presented at Glen Rose High School commencements at Tiger Stadium. Recipients include Band Rhonda Rozelle, Choir Lana Stacy, Art Tamara English, Commercial Jayn Whitt, English Dorothy Cowan, Mathematics Lloyd Martin, Science Alice Loper, Social Studies Neil Gibson, Spanish Nancy Miller, Home Economics Judy Flanary, Vocational Agriculture Jory Hardcastle, Award Dale Conn. Service awards honored Editor Tiger's Tale Marilyn Long, Editor Annual Debbie Reynolds, Business Manager Annual Rhonda Rozelle, President Student Council Bobby West, Sportsmanship Ricky Rhodes and Kathy Smith. Bobby West also won the American Legion Citizenship Award.

County Exceeds Bond 71 Quota in April Sales

Somervell County reports April United States Savings Bond sales of 18 334 to top a four district area as the first to exceed its 1971 goal. First four months total 44 193 with 110 percent of the annual target achieved.

Library Meeting Notes Progress In Local Project

The Glen Rose Somervell County Public Library Board met to discuss routine business. The vacant library building near the Somervell County Historical Museum is being prepared with cataloging work and shelving funded by donated labor. Fort Worth Public Library donated 17 boxes of books, plus 35 books from Ana Paschall and gifts of 10 dollars each from H C Polley and Sam Freas. Wel don Eakin designed a memorial plate for library books. Donations of books are invited by Mrs Cecil Parker and Mrs Tim Whitworth.
