Survey Committee Sets Meeting For Jan 14

Somervell County Historical Survey Committee will meet January 14 at 10:00 a.m. in the courtroom per Gov. Connally’s See and Save Texas History Week proclamation. Ward Preparying For Stormy Texas Legislature Open

Representative J. E. Ward will travel to Austin for the opening of the 60th Legislature. He predicts a stormy session with money measures and debated bills on liquor by the drink and parimutual horse betting. Glen Rose Hosts Valley Mills In District Cage Play

Glen Rose High School basketball teams begin district play Monday hosting Valley Mills. The Glen Rose girls compete in Baylor University girls tournament starting today with a 12 30 p m opener against Gatesville. the tourney runs through Saturday. Junior high teams enter Clifton tournament January 10 12 14 with an opening game versus Itasca at 3 p m Tuesday.

Eleven men register with Somervell draft board

The following 11 men of Somervell County have registered recently with the Selective Service System: Richard Wayne West, Phillip Eugene Jones, Bennie Ray Nickell, Anthony Ray Summers, Charles LaVoid Crisp, Dennis Wayne Bridewell, Sherman Dennis Hopson, Edward Kent Stroud, Fineus Leroy Boyd, Henry O. Lemens Jr., Elzie Wayne Hamilton. Men must notify the board of changes affecting classification. Texas Local Board No. 76 serves Hood, Johnson and Somervell Counties and is in the courthouse at Cleburne. M. Wilson Loper is registrar for Somervell County with offices in the courthouse.

County and School Tax Receipts Are Brisk

County tax and school tax receipts show brisk collections as year begins. C M Speck Strawn reports current taxes $55 396.91 of $85 507.72 with $2 628.85 outstanding. county bills $29 992.23 with $10 801.91 unpaid. Glen Rose School District mailed $46 707.64 in bills and collected $30 027.59. city property bills total $18 004.00 with $8 957.00 collected. January 31 is the deadline without penalties.

Clyde Sexton Quits CPS Lineman Post

R C Clyde Sexton longtime lineman with Community Public Service Co here told the Reporter he terminated his employment effective last Saturday. He plans to stay in Glen Rose for now. Louie Nickell the local manager did not know when a replacement would be named and would announce after a meeting with company officials later in the week.

New Overhead Doors Installed at Glen Rose Fire Station

New and modern overhead doors were installed at Glen Rose Fire Station on Tuesday. The upgrade lets firefighters heat the station and keep trucks warm for fast starts in cold winter weather. Jay Ivy of the city was the contractor with Fort Worth door specialty firm as sub-contractor.

A 1965 annual report shows $86,221 in Veterans Administration benefits paid to veterans dependents and survivors in Somervell County. Charles L. Morris executive director of the Texas Veterans Affairs Commission praised M. Wilson Lopez for the accomplishment.

Free Vote Registration Deadline Nears in Somervell

Somervell County voter registration lags with only 1380 signed up. Citizens aged 21 to 60 must register by January 31 to be eligible for this year’s elections, including annual city and school races and possible specials. The law replaces the poll tax, and officials urge residents to visit the Tax Assessor-Collector’s office to ensure voting rights.

Mrs. Ella Wilemon 100 Dies In Clebur ne Nursing Home

Ella Jane Wilemon, who turned 100 in July 1966, died New Years Day in a Cleburne Nursing Home where she had lived six years. She helped care for the injured after Glen Rose cyclone of 1901 and is survived by a large family including son W. W. Wileman and five daughters. Funeral at Glen Rose First Baptist Church with interment at White Church Cemetery.
