City of Glen Rose and Glen Rose Schools see historic growth with no candidate filings for three city council seats and only three seeking school board posts. The piece notes a lack of leadership worries and highlights a civic call to action amid a quiet election season.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Howard Sego 62 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Garrett Creppon officiating. She died after a lengthy illness in the local hospital. Survivors include her husband, a daughter Laura Sue Laird, a brother Maurcie Pearce and two granddaughters. Interment at White Church Cemetery.
Somervell County commissioners raised Justice of the Peace Precinct No 1 annual pay from 750 to 2520 dollars retroactive to January 1. They also decided to retire the 5000 dollar debt on the new fire station and to invest surplus funds in a passbook savings account as advised. First National Bank was designated as county depository for 1977 78.
Glen Rose High School student Sandra M. Baker topped a Dec 7 nationwide written knowledge and attitude exam to win General Mills Family Leader of Tomorrow honors. She earns a certificate and rises in state judging for a potential $1500 college scholarship. runner up receives $500.
Two residents were hospitalized this week. Jolly Myers was admitted to the local hospital and is in intensive care after two heart attacks. his condition is satisfactory. J M McCroskey was taken by ambulance to Clifton hospital after a fall and head injury and is believed to have had a heart attack, with reports Tuesday indicating satisfactory recovery.
Principal B J Bogart announced that fifty five Walnut Springs School students made the honor roll for the second trimester. Names are listed by grade from first through twelfth, including Angie Messer Gail Paris Jeff Yerby Irene Flores Wayne Halbert Cheryl Higdon Brady Dempsey Kent Munden Michael Billman and many others.
Filing for city council three seats and mayor plus two school trustees and county board seats closes March 2 for elections to be held April 2. Councilman Mickey Garrett resigns after being named to fill the mayoral vacancy. Eddie Stroud notes filings by Garrett and Corky Underwood, with no council candidates yet. Shackelford files for re election. Rumph will not seek another term. others in Precincts 3 and 4 have yet to file.
Surgical patient Jim Bob Bridges son of Mr and Mrs Jack Bridges Jr of this city underwent operation Tuesday at Harris Hospital Fort Worth to repair fractures in his right leg from a fall off an eight foot cliff.
Joe Young arrived home here last week after brain surgery in Fort Worth and is reported to be doing fine. He will continue treatment in Fort Worth, commuting for care.
Two crashes occurred during the first week of a new stop and go signal at US 67 and Farm Road 201. The first involved Mrs. Charles Sanderson and Robert E. Kahn. Sanderson was cited for failure to stop after her light turned red. No injuries reported. The second crash involved Daniel Goldman and Annette R. Tareyton. Tareyton was hospitalized for back injuries and facial lacerations. Goldman was cited for failure to stop at a red light.
Billy R. West Justice of the Peace reports 119 cases heard in January with fines totaling 3142.25. Of this amount 2844.75 went to Somervell County general revenue and 297.50 to the State of Texas. Vehicular violations accounted for 101 cases.
McLennan County Community College offers adult education to Walnut Springs residents. Public meeting set for February 28 at 7 30 p.m. in the school library invites all interested citizens to attend and form classes. Call Principal B J Bogart at 797 2191 for more information.
