A National Weather Service report notes consistently warm and dry conditions this week. Temperatures ranged from 24 to 83 degrees with no measurable precipitation, and February rainfall totals stood at .38 inches for the month, 1.49 inches for the year to date.
County Judge Temple Summers announced that Joe Noah of Granbury was the low bidder awarded the Somervell County fuel supply contract for 1972. Gasoline bid 14.10 per gallon and diesel 12.25, with Mobil offering 14.20 and 13.20 respectively.
The Optimist Club hosted its 19th annual Youth Appreciation banquet at the Tarrant Baptist Encampment. Don Tiny Goss delivered the principal address, introduced by Rev. C Edward Shipman. Charlie Vineyard received an adult award for long service to youth and the community. R C Leach Awards went to Neil Gibson and Nancy Miller. Michael Linch received the Optimist Youth Award.
The Glen Rose Somervell County Library operating five months offers ten hours weekly with new books and donations from residents. Inter library loan is available via Fort Worth Public Library or the Texas State Library upon request to librarian Mrs Tim Whitworth.
Jerry Cox of this city was released from jail after pleading not guilty to Driving While Intoxicated. Highway Patrolman Dewey Watson filed the complaint in County Court. Cox was arrested Saturday night. bond was set at $300. Judge Temple Summers scheduled the case for 9 a.m. March 27 in his court.
Somervell County Home Demonstration Clubs entertain local businessmen and county officials with a tea today from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Community Center. They invite guests to share coffee and view club activities from the past few months.
Glen Rose High School Tigerettes lost 51 42 to Carroll High School in the regional tournament in Denton. Debbie Schuelke led with 21 points as Glen Rose completes a 27 7 season after winning district 16 A and bi district crowns. Debra Schuelke scored 829 points this season. teammates include Dana Mimms 339, Carol Gosdin 250, Dana Pruitt 257, Debbie Shackelford 181, Julia Shackelford 22, Mary Lou Cromeans 13, Diane Newton 13. Team managers were Pam Cox and Becky Page.
Billy Dean Battenfield 19 was arrested by City Marshal Frank Laramore on Monday after a grand jury indictment for burglary in Gatesville. Highway Patrolman Dewey Watson aided in the arrest at a north town residence. Battenfield was previously stopped at 2 am Saturday for loud exhaust and no tail lights, fled, abandoned a car, and later turned to Coryell County officers. the vehicle was registered to Marie Rutledge of McKinney and Battenfield’s license lists Princeton, Texas.
The Family Living Committee sponsored by the Extension Service will host a Story Hour for children four to school age. Sessions run Tuesdays 10 to 11 a.m. in April and May at the local library. Parents with four year olds by April 1 urged to enroll. The piece also notes a family visit from Conroe.
Glen Rose will gain exposure as a key point on the Texas Lakes Trail through a national promotion funded by a $71,984 spring advertising budget from the Texas Tourist Development Agency. A full color Lakes Trail page will appear in six magazines including National Geographic in March and April placements in Better Homes and Garden Life Travel Leisure Redbook and Texas Parade through May.
Granbury resident Tom Holmes announces candidacy for Texas State Senate from the 22nd District. He contrasts himself with an incumbent, criticizes Austin governance, defends honest lawmakers, and cites eight years in the Texas House with a focus on serving his district.
The House Agriculture Committee approved HR 12931 Rural Development Act of 1972 by 32 to 4 to expand Farmers Home Administration credits, emphasize rural and community development and pollution abatement in rural areas. The bill doubles many existing program funds while setting new ceilings and adds a $75 million pollution program and a $50 million Rural Economic Development grant. Rep W R Poage led the effort with support from Democrats and Republicans to curb farm family migration to cities.
