Burglars hit the Hardcastle home eight miles west of town taking coins after entering through a window. The local school bus garage was broken into between midnight and morning Friday, stealing tool chests full of tools, an impact wrench, drill, soft drinks, motor oil and spark plugs. Sheriff Frank Laramore is investigating both incidents.
The nation shifts to Daylight Saving Time this Sunday at 2 01 a m. People lose an hour of sleep but gain an extra hour in the evening for activities such as golf. If not playing golf, the extra hour may be used for chores.
Bill Cowan FFA Advisor and 10 team members from the local chapter traveled to Stephenville Saturday to compete with 143 schools in livestock and dairy cattle judging at Tarleton State University. The dairy team of Bridges Hague Tracy Moss Tony Hatcher and Doug Hammerman finished 12th in a 104 entry field while the livestock team of Kevin Rumph Rusty Wood Sam Dove and Ronnie Beck placed 52nd in a 120 team field. Alternates were Pat Sanders and Gary Schibler.
Kenneth Ray Easley of this city was jailed early Sunday on a driving while intoxicated charge filed by Highway Patrolman Bob Brock. He was taken into custody at 12:50 a.m. while traveling toward Glen Rose on Highway 144, south of town. Easley was released Sunday morning after posting bond. Mr and Mrs H B Patton of Itasca visited in Glen Rose Monday at the home of Mr and Mrs Fred Young. Patton is a former superintendent of schools here.
The past week in Glen Rose was normal for February with cold mornings and warm afternoons. Moisture was negligible at .05 inches over two days, bringing February totals to 2.83 inches for the month and 4.35 inches for the year, per official observer Robert A. Mack of the National Weather Service.
Gifts to the Glen Rose Somervell County Volunteer Fire Department amount to 160 dollars, per secretary Eddie Stroud. An anonymous donor gave 100 dollars. other contributions include 25 dollars from Jim Hewlett and 25 dollars from Mrs. Lewis Howard, with a 10 dollar donation from Sy Mann.
Somervell County Centennial Association invites the public to a Monday 7 30 p m meeting at the high school auditorium. Officers and executive committee members will be introduced and provide highlights of the planned centennial events. Rogers Company consultant to present plans and needs, followed by a Q A. A large turnout is hoped for across ages to shape the two day meetings next week.
Plans near completion for the Eighth Annual Rattlesnake Hunt sponsored by the Lions Club in Walnut Springs on Feb 28 to March 2. Events include hunting parties, pit shows, a big dance, snake milking demonstrations, and cash prizes over $200 plus trophies in multiple divisions. The weekend peaks with Saturday night dance in the Lions Den and Sunday prize ceremonies.
Four Somervell County 4-H members showed Polled Herefords at the Houston Livestock Show. Tom Talley won two firsts with his junior heifer calf. Weldon Branham and Lisa Dehtan also showed calves, with Talley’s junior heifer calves first in class and Branham and Dehtan placing in various junior and senior divisions.
Glen Rose Optimist Club announces tickets for the All-Sports Banquet will be on sale. The event at Glen Lake Methodist Camp is on March 4. Prices are 1.00 for students and 2.00 for adults, available from club members and local outlets. Mr and Mrs W A Brown of Peoria Illinois visited with their son and the Barclay family during the period.
In a Thursday assembly at Glen Rose High School, senior band and football lettermen received letter jackets. Mrs. Doyle Margie Cooper, longtime team statistician, also received a jacket for meritorious service. Four new National Honor Society members were inducted: Carolyn Metker, Peggy Oldham, Terry Wilson, and Tom Loper.
Directors of the Glen Rose Somervell County Chamber of Commerce convene at 2:00 p.m. in the Gibbs Building conference room to elect officers and reorganize for the new chamber year. Board members include Joe Huffman William Wilson Lloyd Locke Garland Osborne Charles R Jordan Gerald Wood Ken Brown Troy Powell and Jack McCarty.
Easter Seal letters go out this week, led by Jack Bridges Jr. of Somervell County Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Texas. The group funds physical and occupational therapy, speech and hearing programs, and equipment loans through the annual appeal and fall drive.
