Obituary: John Wallace 78 Glen Rose resident dies
John Wallace 78 of Glen Rose died February 9 after six years of ill health. A retired farmer, he moved from Johnsville in Erath County. Funeral Friday at Higginbottom Chapel Stephenville with Rev. Ernest Rippe toe officiating. Survivors include his widow a daughter and a grandson. Pallbearers were L E Firestone E G Connally Earl Jackson Bob Taylor and two Stephenville friends. Burial in West End Cemetery Stephenville.

Eight proposed constitutional amendments will be voted on in the general election on November 6. They include compensation to prisoners found innocent, reallocating the county general fund within an 89 cent tax rate, revising the state college building program and allowing investment of the permanent university fund, broadening the teacher retirement system, doubling the veterans land fund from 100 million to 200 million, revising the oath of office for state officials, waiving jury trials in lunacy cases, and allowing a judge to deny bail for those with two prior felonies.

REA Loans Improve Rural Telephone Service in 1955
The Rural Electrification Administration issued 188 long term low interest loans totaling over 66 million dollars to expand and improve telephone service for about 185000 farms and rural establishments. Two thirds of the loans were made in the last half of 1955, with much of the funding aiding new borrowers and expanding rural reach. Since 1949 the REA program has built new or improved service for roughly 600 thousand subscribers.

Owners Reject City Offer for Palaxy Bridge Right of Way
In a Monday City Council meeting the council offered landowners about 260 per acre for 4.4 acres needed for the Palaxy Bridge project on Highway 67. Owners O. J. Miles R. L. Nickell and Dr. Robert D. English rejected the offer. Perry Dempsey was absent. The mayor said the next step is to inform county commissioners and pursue condemnation or abandonment. Some suggested a different line to obtain land for free, but no action would occur without signed consent from affected landowners.

Death of L C Barrow Stalwart Somervell County Farmer
L C Babe Barrow longtime Somervell County resident died Sunday February 12 in a Caldwell hospital after a long illness. He was a retired farmer born near Brazos Point February 4 1882 and lived in the area all his life. Funeral services were conducted February 13 at Glen Rose Funeral Home chapel with burial in Squaw Creek cemetery. Survivors include two sons Floyd of Alice and Melvin of Midlothian two daughters Mrs Ray Canfield of Benavides Texas and Mrs Preston Abernathy of Freer Texas nine grandchildren and pallbearers Norman Gartrell T J Underwood Dennis Hopson Dick Williams Robert Rives and Edd Mimms.
