Jessie Arthur Newman 42 of this city died from gunshot wounds in a Fort Worth northside altercation about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Nicki Husley also was wounded in the neck and another man charged with murder is held in the county jail. Funeral services were held at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel with Elder A D Wood officiating.

J C Montgomery aged 56 and a Fort Worth security worker was appointed Somervell County Sheriff and Tax Assessor-Collector to fill the unexpired term of the late C M Speck Strawn. The unanimous Commissioners Court vote made the appointment in special session. Montgomery, a Gen Rose native, will devote full time and welcomes public visits to his office.

Registration Period Extended To February 28
Somervell County officials received word from Secretary of State Martin Dies Jr. that the voter registration deadline in Texas has moved from January 31 to February 28. About 1,170 county residents had registered by the old date. Voters must register to take part in regular city and school elections and a May 18 state constitutional referendum including a welfare provision. other elections may follow. All residents 18 and older must register this year.

Jimmy Platt Wounded in Action in Vietnam
Word reached here that Jimmy Patt was wounded in Vietnam while serving in the US Army. He called his wife Sharon and his parents Norvell and (Mrs.) Platt from an evacuation hospital and said he would move to a base hospital in Japan. He enlisted last year on January 27 and arrived in Vietnam December 29 after basic training at Fort Polk Louisiana.

Fiddlers Pay Tribute to Simmons Counte
Fiddlers from this section honor the late Herschel Simmons and his wife Hazel who died in a car crash between here and Granbury last year. The program, on Feb 20 in the high school auditorium, is sponsored by the Somervell County Historical Society with proceeds funding a memorial. Burn Victim Dies in Dallas Hospital
Catarino Ramirez, 34, a Latin American farm worker at Force Farms, died at Parkland Hospital Dallas from burns covering most of his body suffered November 2 while using gasoline to clean a coat. He was transported by ambulance and his body was sent to Mexico for burial.

Tigerettes Clinch District Title Advance to Bi District
The Glen Rose Tigerettes coached by Paul Schuelke win the District 16-A girls title and will face Kennedale’s Wildcats in a Burleson High School bi district game Monday at 8 p.m. Admission is 75 cents for students and 1.25 dollars for adults. The Tigerettes were undefeated in district play while Kennedale stands 9-1 in 15-A with a 22-7 season. The winner advances to the regional tournament in Denton on February 20.

Funeral for C M Speck Strawn 59 longtime Somervell County sheriff and tax assessor collector, held Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Hutcheson. Strawn died Monday of an apparent heart attack at home. He served as sheriff since 1964 and was re elected in 1968. He was born January 1 1912 in Buffalo Springs. Survivors include wife Mary Lou Bagly a son a daughter his mother a brother five sisters and three grandchildren. Burial at Squaw Creek Cemetery conducted by Reynolds Funeral Home. Pallbearers included local and area officials.
