Glen Rose seeks a new bus station to replace ill Helen Brown’s setup. The job offers about 35 dollars a month on commission, requiring space for a few passengers and small freight. The project aids elderly residents relying on transit and supports quick deliveries from Fort Worth Dallas and Waco.
Somervell County 1968 Savings Bonds and Freedom Shares totalled 87319.00, surpassing the 40000 goal at 218 percent under Doyle Cooper chairing the county committee. Texas 1968 sales reached 177371504, up 6.7 percent from 1967, with December at 13070587. National 1968 E and H Bonds and Freedom Shares reached 4872 million, 90 percent of the 5500 million goal.
Showers Thursday afternoon and night brought .45 inches of rain on the local U.S. Weather Bureau gauge, recorded by official observer T. J. Davis. January total reached 5.2 inches, with .05 on Jan. 16 and .02 on Jan. 29 and trace on Jan. 3, well above last January’s 5.49 inches and far above 1967’s .10 inches. Normal January rainfall is 2.18 inches.
In Somervell County 945 residents registered to vote this year compared with 1 414 last year during a presidential election. Tax Assessor Strawn reported 297 forms signed in the past week. Upcoming elections include city and school trustees positions, both held the first week in April.
Volunteer firefighters from Glen Rose Fire Department tackled two rural blazes this week. Sunday they fought a six hour pasture fire on the Stewart Ranch burning about 750 acres and long fence lines near Eulogy, with units from Meridian, Morgan, Clifton, Walnut Springs and Cleburne aiding. Tuesday another pasture fire at the Reece White place in Nemo burned two to three acres.
Marine Corporal Jackie R. Riddle, son of Mrs. Ola J. Riddle of Nemo and husband of the former Miss Mary E. Baze of Alvarado, is serving with Marine Air Base Squadron 12 in Vietnam.
Senator J P Word of Meridian was named Chairman of the Texas Senate Committee on Nominations by Lt Gov Ben Barnes. He also joined committees on Agricultural and Livestock Banking Contingent Expenses County District and Urban Affairs Education Finance Insurance Labor and Management Relations Public Health State Affairs Water and Conservation and Youth Affairs. Word, an attorney and former Bosque County Judge, has served in the Senate since 1963 and previously chaired other committees. He and wife Bobbye have three children.
The Texas Highway Department releases its 1969 Official State Highway Map featuring 127 new Interstate miles from IH 40 to the New Mexico line and IH 635 in Dallas. The map includes urban region insets for Longview Kilgore Tyler and enlarged Beaumont Port Arthur Orange area, plus 11 tourist bureaus and 1,100 safety rest areas. Governor Preston Smith offers a welcome message to travelers.
Doyle Cooper, Somervell County Chairman, announces a door to door canvass of the business community next week to collect funds for birth defect research and treatment. Contributions may be mailed or given to Cooper or Mrs. Clinton Earl Whitt or left at First National Bank, with envelopes distributed to students. Monies go to both local chapter and National Foundation.
The Glen Rose Somervell County Chamber of Commerce will elect three directors this week. Ballots mailed to members require one vote for individuals and two for business members. Seven candidates appear on the ballot for three three year terms, including Logan Walker George Hudson Buzz Evans Jerre Deason Helen Brown S L Mann Jr and J M MecCroskey Spinks Grocery & Station manager.
Elbert Wilson of this city was the first buyer of 1969 vehicle license plates Monday morning. Tax Assessor-Collector Speck Strawn reported sales up to noon Tuesday totalled 57 passenger car tags, 10 farm pickup tags and 10 commercial vehicle tags. Glen Rose FFA team members Mike Lewellen, David Harris, Ronald Dempsey and David Henderson competed in Fort Worth at the Fat Stock Show poultry judging contests.
State Representative J E Ward of Glen Rose is named Chairman of the Committee on Enrolled and Engrossed Bills by House Speaker Gus F Mutscher. Lt Governor Ben Barnes predicts defeat of compulsory consolidation of Texas school districts, saying voluntary consolidation with incentives will be favored and Senate Bill No 2 will not enact compulsory moves this year.
