Lynnoog West, star fullback of the 1958 Tiger team, was presented the Wachsman Trophy by J. M. McCroskey, superintendent of schools, at the annual football banquet. The award honors senior nonathletes who meet citizenship and activity criteria. Speaker Bill Meek urged preparation for the future. the event was sponsored by the Glen Rose Optimist Club.
Mr and Mrs J G Jowers of Lampasas open a new automatic laundry at the former Williams location. The washhouse offers 24 hour service with washers and dryers and plans to move to Glen Rose shortly.
Ballots tabulated by the Chamber of Commerce last Friday night fill three director vacancies for 1959. Elected by mail were George Snyder J E Warg and Walter Ernst to serve three years replacing Dr R D English M G McConal and Charlies Gibbs. The annual Awards Banquet is set for February 24 honoring former presidents in a Hometown affair with no after dinner speeches.
Henry George, son in law of Mr and Mrs G C Gibbs, has passed all CPA exams and is certified as a Certified Public Accountant. He is a native of Cleburne, son of Mr and Mrs Taylor George, married to Betty Faye Gibbs, and currently Parker County auditor at Weatherford.
Second in a series of studio photos features Judy Whitworth Randy Lee Chambers Brenda Gartrell siblings Christy Mansfield James Wesley Elizabeth Judy White and other children of local families. The caption lists parent names and child relationships in top and bottom rows.
Mr and Mrs John D Gordon announce the birth of a son Gerald Glenn on January 23 at Keesler Field Mississippi. The infant weighed 5 pounds 10.4 ounces at birth. Grandparents are Chester Railsnider and Delvin Spencer. Relatives plan to visit Biloxi this weekend.
Dr and Mrs Marks and Mr and Mrs Bill Gavit left for a Florida vacation Thursday.
County tax collector reports 465 poll taxes paid for 1959 with 280 by Wednesday before the deadline. Payments increased before the 31st deadline. Car owners must present a title and 1958 license receipt before licensing. State agencies urge enforcement of the rule.
Dr Bill Ward a Baylor Dental school graduate and former Navy Lt Senior Grade will open an office in Cleburne on Monday February 9. He will partner with Dr James Curtis at Kim bro Clinic and is a Glen Rose High School and Baylor University alumnus who starred in football and basketball.
Glen Rose Girls defeated Mid Glen Rose Girls prevailed in a non conference win. Glen Rose Boys dropped both reported contests with the girls team securing home court intentions for a forthcoming Itasca game.
Howard Sego resigned from the City Council last Tuesday night and announced his candidacy for mayor in the April city election. The council accepted the resignation with regret and set April 7 as the election date. They also approved water and sewer rate increases to cover higher materials costs.
About 150 people attended the annual March of Dimes banquet at Glen Lake Methodist Camp on Thursday night January 29. Dr. Roger E. Marks delivered an informative talk. The HD Clubs of Somervell County served the dinner and helped with organization. A total of 5127.61 was raised.
The Walnut Springs Lions Club met at the American Legion Hall with J. W. Hagler of Longview as the guest speaker. Zone officer Pederson of Clifton attended. Homemaking Girls served dinner at the high school. Various locals and visitors were noted including families moving to town and church conference attendances. Continued on back page.
Harry L. Mosier of Glen Rose repeats the oath at Fort Eustis to become a captain in the Army Reserve. He will remain on active duty as assistant yard master for the 714th Transportation Battalion. Mosier has the Purple Heart Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge and is the son of Mr and Mrs Harry L Mosier Sr of Glen Rose. His wife Ruth accompanies him.
The Speaker announced the all important House committee appointments this week. The author expresses satisfaction with his roles in Constitutional Amendments Agriculture Education Hospitals and Special Schools and chairs the committee examining the Comptroller and Treasurer Departments. He notes a Texas Research League study on the Comptroller's Department and the priority of REA co op rights versus private power firms in rural and annexed areas. He urges fair changes to Saul Hazelwood style provisions to aid REA and avoid harming rural life and economy.
Mrs Maggie Snyder and her sister Mrs G A Gaovette of San Diego returned from a four week trip to Hawaii. They sailed on the Matsonia from Los Angeles and came back to San Francisco aboard the Lurtine.
The 1958-59 basketball schedule lists February dates with home and away games against Itasca and Clifton. District competition appears on February 10 and February 6 shows Connally at home.
The First National Bank will close next Thursday for Lincoln's Birthday. The Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet is set for February 24.
