Somervell County and the state see rising political activity as registrations near an all time high. Youth voters ages 18 to 21 increase numbers and new rules allow registration up to 30 days before elections. Five candidates announce for public office this week with more expected next week as primary filing looms Monday.
Representative J. E. Ward of Glen Rose announces candidacy for Texas State Representative in the newly created 33rd District comprising Earth Hood Johnson and Somervell Counties. A veteran lawmaker he chairs the Penitentiaries committee and has supported farm to market roads aided mental hospitals schools and higher education while backing law enforcement improvements and the screwworm eradication program. He formerly served as mayor and on the school board. Ward emphasizes leadership and experience for the 1970s legislature and notes his family and church ties.
Eddie Stroud stood in line Tuesday at the County Tax Assessor-Collector office to purchase the first Tl license plates, DWJ 50. Officials reported brisk opening day sales and 35 plate sets sold by 11 a.m. Motorists may renew by mail using the three-part form, with a $1 fee, before March 1. Do not detach any part of the form as the entire package must be mailed or presented.
Mr and Mrs Lewis Reynolds owners of Reynolds Funeral Home visited Granbury on Sunday to tour the open house hosted by Martin Funeral Home.
Somervell County Tax Assessor-Collector J. C. Montgomery reported 1 083 residents have registered to vote this year. The first primary deadline is April 5 and the General Election registration cutoff is October 7. Voters may register up to 30 days before an election and still qualify to ballot.
Secretary of State Bob Bullock said registration did not end January 31 and that under the new law voters can register anytime. He noted a 30 day preregistration requirement to vote in an election and said reminders are being mailed to county tax assessor collectors. Tolley Underwood returns home from hospital in Glen Rose after recent surgery and is reported improving.
Logan H. Walker announced a chamber canvas showing Mrs. Sue Brown Roy Parnell and Walter Ernst elected as directors for three-year terms. They replace retiring directors Walker Zack B. Evans and George Hudson. Plans were made for the chamber banquet March 6 at Glen Lake Methodist Camp dining hall with Arlington Mayor Tommy Vandergriff as keynote speaker.
Senator Tom Creighton of Mineral Wells announces bid for reelection from the 22nd District for the term starting January 1973. He has served since 1960, chaired the Water and Conservation and Privileges and Elections committees, and sits on key budget panels with a conservative spending record.
J B Gosdin incumbent county Commissioner Precinct No 3 announced his candidacy for reelection subject to the Democratic Primary Elections. He will not distribute campaign cards preferring to donate campaign funds to the Fire Department for a new rescue vehicle. He urged voters to judge his two terms by his work in Somervell County over eight years.
Kenneth Taylor of Glen Rose announces his candidacy for County Commissioner of Precinct No 1 in the upcoming Democratic primary. He cites business qualifications and pledges to visit residents, serve the entire county, and seek voters’ support.
Superintendent J. M. McCroskey announced a flu epidemic reduced attendance at the local school. Absences Friday and Monday reached 9 and 12 percent, mainly among lower grades, with two teachers out as well.
Robert Mack of the National Weather Service reports January as the driest month since March of last year with total moisture at 1.11 inches compared to 0.24 inches the previous year. The daily figures show small amounts of moisture across January 25 to January 31, indicating continued low precipitation.
Itasca Wampus Cats defeated the Roundballers in both girls and boys games last Tuesday. Girls lost 51 to 50 with Debra Schuelke scoring 17 for the locals. Boys fell 92 to 73 as Itasca surged.
Local artist Robert T. Summers will display an acrylic painting at the American Artists Professional League 21 day exhibit in Lever House at 53rd Street and Park Avenue New York City. The annual grand national exhibition begins February 20.
A. J. Hammond, local businessman, announces his candidacy for County Commissioner of Precinct No 1 in the Democratic Primary. He notes 16 years in Somervell County, married to Elizabeth Osborn, with three children, and ownership of Hammond's Barbecue in Glen Rose and property in Cottonwood. He says business experience and precinct knowledge qualify him to serve the people.
Justice of the Peace H. C. Polley announced that January fines from his court totaled 510 dollars, all from traffic violations filed by area officers.
