Barbara Marshment, 16, appointed this month to the California State Board of Education as the first student advisory member. A straight-A student, she supports campus order and was selected by a California Association of Students Councils screening committee. she will have no voting rights.
Gladewater officials led by Melvin Jenkins, Bill Langford, and Ernest Martin will present to the Texas Highway Commission on Wednesday October 1 at 9 a.m. plans for a loop around the east side, connecting US 80 and US 271 with one way streets as part of Highway 271 improvements from the Gregg Upshur line to the Sabine River bridge. Langford says financing depends on the bond market and a future general obligation bond election is likely.
Byron Boston, a GHS graduate, is named starter at tight end for the Austin College Kangaroos after earning a full aid package. Wollens will be closed for Kippur Monday but open 6:30 to 9 p.m. City Hall undergoes remodeling including new entrance, desk area, and chief's office paneling.
City Manager Bill Langford announced the appointment of Larry Stratton, a local mechanic and licensed pilot, as manager of the city-owned airport. Stratton will run the fixed base operation, plan a three-plane charter service, build a hangar, and later establish a flying instruction school with his daughter Joanne. He currently flies fire patrol for the state forest service.
Gladewater Jaycees distribute 3000 letters for citizens to sign urging prayer in schools as part of a Texas Jaycees drive. The effort aims for 300000 letters statewide while critics like Mrs Madelyn O Hare oppose space broadcasts and push petitions, with signatures collected at 500 Maple Street or by calling 845 3911.
James Jody Lacy, 40, is charged with murder in the death of his wife Joy Willis Lacy. Her body was found in an Ore City Motel and Lacy was jailed in Gilmer after arrest by Upshur County officials. Autopsy ordered after inquest noted severe beatings. Funeral held in Danville with burial in Danville Cemetery. Survivors include two sons, a daughter, mother, and extended kin.
Robert G. Honeycutt promoted to market investment program manager for Humble Oil Western Region. News details his education at Gladewater High School University of Texas NYU MBA and career path from truck salesman to regional manager, plus community interests.
Norman W. Glickman, 45, named president of Honey Toys after Quentin Abernathy bought the plant. Glickman will start October 23 and comes from Foley's of Houston. Abernathy owns 100 percent of Honey Toys stock. the Dallas owners had planned to shut the plant. The factory employs about 100 workers, many women, whose livelihoods depend on payroll. Honey Toys makes children's sportswear.
