Gladewater Independent School Board met a fast pace Monday night with all members present. Three new faculty join: Bryant N. Wills art Middle School, B A Morgan moves to high school art, Billy M. Ford remedial math Middle School, Glendora Carter chemistry high school. enrollment at 2020. Plan approved to build an agriculture building near the gym and convert old ag area to four classrooms. meat lab dropped. Insurance bids to be reviewed after a meeting September 19. A band instrument van, a 1972 Econoline, was purchased for marching and storage. page 11 follows.

City plans first ambulance rate hike in eight years
Gladewater city council will consider increasing ambulance charges for out of town trips at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Current rates date from 1967 when the fire department took over EMS. New out of town rates raise emergency runs to 30 dollars and transfers to 25, with oxygen at 5 dollars plus 5 more per 50 miles. in town rates stay the same.

Gunshot Fatal to Young Woman in Longview
A former Gladewater resident, Charla Walden aged 16, died at Good Shepherd Hospital after a self inflicted gunshot wound with a .22 caliber pistol. Police say she called 7 p.m. Tuesday despondent and was moved from her South Street apartment to the hospital where she died six hours later. Funeral services are pending. Charla Walden survived by her husband Russell Waldon, son Jason, and her parents Norma Johnson and O C Alsebrook with siblings Bobby Britt and Ladonna Perritt.

Mrs Clara Nesbitt Dies at Municipal Hospital
Mrs. Clara Nesbitt a retired Municipal Hospital employee died around 1 am Wednesday in the hospital. A Big Sandy resident she is survived by three sons Harold Gerald and Dickey and four daughters Mrs Nora Beth Musik Mrs Cynthia Nesbitt Billy Joe Nesbitt and Helen Funeral arrangements are pending with Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer.

Chamber hears project plans for carnival and tour
At a chamber of commerce luncheon, plans for the Halloween carnival arts crafts show and the annual industrial tour were discussed. Roy Johnson said the carnival is moving ahead with East Mountain and Union Grove likely to participate. The event runs November 1 from 6 to 9 30 p m at Round-Up Rodeo grounds with 40 to 50 booths. Lions and Rotary clubs will participate.

Chamber To Hold Dunking Concession At Arts Show
The chamber sets up a dunking booth with booth applications and rules issued. Advance tickets cost 25 cents children 50 cents adults, at the gate 35 and 75 cents. A $25 refundable clean up deposit is required. The second annual arts and crafts show on Sept 27–28 expects bigger crowds, with 84 booths paid and Jaycees showing progress.

Halloween Carnival Planned by Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Halloween Carnival at the Rodeo Grounds on November 1. Service clubs and organizations are invited to participate with booths after submitting an entry form and a $25 deposit. Advance tickets cost 25 cents for children and 50 cents for adults, with gate prices higher. Each group must provide two helpers for parking and policing. Clubs selling advance tickets keep 25 percent of sales. Carnival hours are 6 to 9 30 p.m.

Suspect Held on Aggravated Rape Charge in Upshur County
Leroy Helen Jr., 20, of Gladewater, remains jailed on aggravated rape charges with a $75,000 bond. The incident occurred Friday near U S Highway 271 as a 13 year old girl and her 60 year old aunt were attacked in a home. The girl identified Helen in a lineup after he fled into a wooded area adjacent to Vesta Drive. The aunt sustained head injuries from a knife or machete.

UF plans finalized for annual United Fund drive
Officers and directors met at the Chamber of Commerce to set the two week drive from October 6 to October 18. President Jack Earp announced a $15,000 goal and a house to house canvass by Camp Fire and Boys' Baseball Association members. First vice president Mrs. Kirk Abercrombie will chair.
