Miss Jean Marie Wilkins 18 daughter of Mr and Mrs George Wilkins will represent Gladewater in the Forest Festival Pageant held in Atlanta on Wednesday designated as an official Miss Texas Universe Pageant. The winner earns over 1500 in prizes and may enter the 1972 Miss Texas Universe Pageant.

San Angelo Texas President Nixon’s wage price freeze postpones intrastate long distance rate changes. General Telephone traffic director L L Porter says dial it yourself rates would align with interstate ones, but operator assisted calls carry higher costs. The delay lasts until the 90 day freeze ends with uncertain guidelines to follow.
Dr Browning lectures to about 70 scientists worldwide on disease resistance in oats. He praises former student Dr Blanche Cournoyer Haning who earned a PhD at Iowa State in 1970 and married the next day. Gregg County observer Judge Henry Atkinson is appointed chairman of the Gregg County Food and Fiber Abundance Week observance set for November 15 through 21. The statewide effort is led by C G Scruggs and involves Governor Preston Smith and Commissioner John C White as honorary chairs. State Senate member Lindley Beckworth told Rotarians that Mineola Big Sandy and Lake Fork reservoirs are in early preplanning. A suspect was arrested in Longview and transported to Tyler for charges in the Thursday kidnapping of a nine year old girl near Diana and near Troup. The girl was found at the Troup dump and treated at a Tyler hospital. the suspect is held in Smith County jail with no bond set.
The newly organized Kiwanis Club in Gladewater will install officers at 6:30 Tuesday morning at St. Clair Restaurant. James Walker was named president. Johnny Dishman and Stan Midler are vice presidents. Bob Ullrich, treasurer and secretary. Charter members include 15 names. a charter night is set for Oct. 19.
A one car collision near the Vesta Drive bridge around noon Saturday left A P Freeman of White Oak with minor injuries. He was driving a 1967 Chevrolet and treated at City Hospital before release. Officers Leon Sharrock and Jerry Henderson investigated.
